“Basic, clean, near HK Macau Ferry”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

Booked the standard room with 1 double bed. Tight space but I think it was efficiently used. Very clean, looked new and bright. A basic, contemporary, budget hotel.

The reception is on the 5th floor and it was very busy when we checked in, and busy when we checked out (and asked them to keep our bags for a few hours).

Short walk to the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal. Perfect for us doing a day trip to Macau - going back late in the evening.

The only turn-off: the powder in the complimentary sachets of coffee and creamer were all clumped up. Seemed like it's been there since the hotel was built. Didn't bother taking our usual morning coffee in bed.

I loved the floor to ceiling windows as it lets all the light in - but we chose to shut the thin curtains most of the time anyway as the windows (we later found out) were not designed for privacy - you could see through from outside in. I noticed this when I was at the hallway by the elevators that had windows facing a side of the hotel building. I saw everyone. And our room window was facing a few buildings.

This is a good hotel if you already know your way around using public transportation and/or would like to explore other or the more everyday spots in HK. May not be the best option if you want to be efficient with time in seeing the (touristy) sites or shopping for souvenirs.

The hotel is nice, the room is nice too. But it takes at least 10 minute or more to walk from the hotel to nearest MTR station (Sheung wan station). The surrounding is a bit old. The most disappointing is room service only give us one dental kit, one pair of slippers as default (to think about it, we did book a double room, and as we can easily order more from reception without any cost, why would you not place them there in the first place?). Wifi access is nice, too. Maybe it's too much to expect, but the refrigerator in the room is a bit too tiny (but, as I said, it's cheap so that's ok with me)

Great location, 5 mins comfortable walk (no luggage) to Sheung Wan MTR which is at the end of the Island Line on HK island. Also within walking distance are local shops selling dried seafood, also 10 mins walk to some bars & cafes along Hollywood Rd. Beyond that (in cool weather) you could also walk for 30 mins to the HK Zoological & Botanical Gardens & the Peak Tram in Central. But it being HK island, lots of slopes & steps to be expected in that direction.

The FREE Airport Express shuttle bus service H1 from Hong Kong Station takes you to/ from the hotel front door, buses run every 20 mins or so. Hotel staff were very professional & polite, & spoke good, clear English. Even reminded me to remove items from my room safe during check-out.

As I had requested for a non-smoking room, the only one they had available when I checked in was a disability-accessible one, so I got a free "upgrade" (more space). I'm sure they weren't expecting any wheelchair-users that week.

(Single male Singaporean in my 30s travelled alone.)

We stayed 7 nights and had 2 connecting rooms. The strange part about this building is that although there are 5 lifts, only 3 lifts is connected to the hotel rooms above the reception area. So if you're on the 32nd floor like us, and happen to take a lift that does not go down to the ground floor, you'll have to stop at the 5th floor (there is no 4th floor and below), get out and take another lift to get down to the ground floor. This can prove tricky if you get stuck with 5 other people with luggages waiting to get down to the ground floor as well.

As we arrived late morning, we couldn't check in but were able to leave our luggage at the reception area and go off to have a bite to eat. Even upon checking out, we left our luggage and went off to find bk'fast before coming back to claim our luggage to leave for the airport. Reception staff speak very good English.

Reception is on the 5th floor. This is not clearly stated anywhere on the ground floor of the building so I guess some people may be confused on where reception is.

Rooms were fairly clean and as we had the top floor, we had gorgeous harbour views. The room is very small and very basic. A flat-screen TV with several local programmes were provided, bottle of mineral water was given daily, a small empty mini-fridge, coffee-tea making facilities and a safe were the standard items in the room. You could control your adjustable air-con and a very small cupboard space with a few hangers were provided as well. The bed was harder than I liked but pillows were soft and fluffy.

I would commend housekeeping as anything we requested for were promptly delivered within 10 minutes.

We only had the buffet breakfast once and it was ok. I must say they had the best hash-browns that day, way better than McDonalds. Scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon rounded up the western part of the bk'fast. The oriental section had fried noodles, a dimsum dish and porridge. Then you have your breads, croissant and some muffins. Coffee/Tea/Juices were the standard fare.

Regarding the nearest MTR, different people say different things. Some say it's a 15-min walk, some say it's a 5-min walk. It's all a matter of perspective. Say you're a family with young kids, then I would say it's less than a 15-min walk. Or if you're single and walk with long strides, then it may be a possible 5-min walk.

From Ibis, there is a free shuttle mini-bus that comes every 20 mins round the corner to pick up passengers to the airport express. What's amazing is that once you drop off from the shuttle, you check your bags in at this airport express, then you take the special MTR straight to the airport. No hassle and no big luggage to lug around. The shuttle stops at 2 hotels before heading to the airport express MTR. From the airport express, you'll need to buy a special MTR 1-stop pass that will take you directly to the airport. Don't worry about your Octopus card, once you reach the airport MTR, you can return the Octopus card and get back the full value remaining in the card.

I would advise people to bring a little bit more cash, as a lot of the smaller eating establishments do not accept credit card. There is a Chinese restaurant at Ibis located on the 2nd floor (you can't take the lift, go down to the ground floor, then take the stairs up) which has pretty good food at reasonable prices. It's not connected to Ibis so you can't charge your meals to the room. We had most of our breakfast and dinner there.

Ibis is in a pretty good area. The Macau ferry terminal is just opposite the hotel. From Ibis to Disneyland (door-to-door) takes about 1.5 hours in all, so plan your trip well. It takes roughly about the same time to reach Ngong Ping.

Ibis is located in a neighbourhood that sells nothing but dried goods as far as the eye can see. Dried prawns, dried seahorse, dried funny and weird looking stuff, I think I even saw dried bat. We never felt afraid even though we walked back around 10pm from the MTR to Ibis. It's a safe neighbourhood and there will definitely be random people walking back from work.

Overall I wouldn't mind staying here again.
