The racecourse is a great night out, with a really fun atmosphere. They had Octoberfest celebrations on too when I went, so not sure if this made it busier than normal, but even with all the people you still had time to get a drink, see the horses before you put your bet on and then get back out for a prime spot over the finish line.

The staff were friendly and helpful and helped me fill out my form so that I was putting the bet on as I intended.

We payed 100 HK Dollars to be in the members enclosure which I thought was fairly cheap compared to what I have paid in the UK and we got some great views over the finish line as the horses went past, but apparently you can go in to the public section for just 10 HK Dollars.

I expected to have to wait ages to get a taxi as everyone floods out at the same time after the last race, however we just walked up a side street across from the race course and had a taxi to whisk us away in just 5 minutes. Brilliant night out, especially when you win as I did. :-)

I have been to Golden Wednesday several times now and have never failed to have a fantastic time.

The location of this racecourse is off the scale - with all the high-rise buildings standing round the course like spectators with hundreds of eager gambling eyes. The atmosphere is always electric - what with the local obsession with gambling, and the fact that you can get right up along the grass just adds to the fun.

HK$10 for admission - so you can spend the rest of your money on the horses.

Walked miles to get there, placed our bet and then discovered the reason for the small crowd - we'd made the effort to go, pity the horses hadn't bothered! Turned out the racing on the big screen was being held elsewhere! Obviously live, as betting going on, but a huge disappointment as zilch atmosphere. So double-check it's a race night before going. - we didn't even think of it as we went on a Weds which is supposed to be the big night.

Happy Valley on a Wednesday night in October - is an amazing experience. Even if you don't like horse racing - it only costs $10 to go in the public entrance and you could just watch a couple of races and go out. However if you want a seat - get there early. It helps if you are in a group so that someone can keep your seat for you if you go to the food outlets/bars/loo/or to place a bet. Westerners tend to congegrate near the entrance where there aren't many seats - but there is a beer garden.

However it can get very crowded indeed - especially October thru December with queues for drinks and real congestion near the entrance where you can be jostled and if you are claustrophobic and don't like that sort of thing I don't recommend it.

If you are not familiar with the tote system of betting - then there are helpful English speaking guides at the information desks who will explain how to do it.

If you don't like the sweaty crowds and want a more exclusive experience - then there are various ways of getting a race badge for the members' enclosures - and some boxes will have their own bars and catering. I believe this can be arranged through local tour companies, or travel desks at hotels. However the easiest way to do it - is to go to the members' enclosure with your passport and pay HK$100 for ordinary meetings and HK$150 for special meetings. Check the Jockey Club calendar. There is a dress code for the members' enclosure however - generally no jeans, t-shirts, sports shoes, shorts etc. A collared polo shirt with slacks and shoes (with socks) is fine for men - and generally smart casual attire for women is OK.

Watch the totalisator and see how much money is bet on each race. A staggering amount.
