Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence

It is easy to get there by MTR. Just got off at the Shaukeiwan Station and take B2 exit. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk.

The coastal fortress is nicely redeveloped into a museum of coastal defense. Architecturally, it is very beautiful. Paying HK$10 (and for senior citizen HK$5) entrance fee, you can enjoy a walk back in history to the Opium War as well as seeing various defense structure and display outdoor. Do go down towards the waterfront podium that gives you a magnificant view of the Lei Yue Mun waterway. It was a Saturday evening, and we saw streams of pleasure crafts heading back to the harbour wrapping for the day. A great view to see.

There is a small cafe in the museum where quick snack can be bought. Not great but convenient.

We visited after going to the Museum of Hong Kong History and found that much of the information overlapped particularly on the Opium Wars.

The museum is traditional in its approach with information on a board and a few exhibits in contrast to the Museum of History which offers a much greater visual display in my opinion.

There were some outdoor exhibits but we were overwhelmed by the humidity. We did enjoy the view towards the old airport and from the top were able to gain a clear understanding as to the importance of the strategic location.

The museum is easy to find with clear direction a once you exit the MTR. Costing only $10 per adult I think this is good for a rainy day. If you intend to stay a while bring your own food and drink as the cafe is very limited in scope. It is fine for drinks but not so good for snacks. You can buy food near the MTR station.

Especially thrilling for boys, with its canons, torpedoes, tanks, battlements, a good trek up a nd down the hilly terrain to visit all its treasures....

No where near as big as Anaheim, but it still has the charm and excitement of Disneyland. It is a must do while you are in Hong Kong.

This is an interesting and well laid out museum. It was a rainy day and we wanted an interesting place to visit and this museum did not disappoint. Take the MTR to Shaukewan on the Island Line and take exit B2. It is well signposted from the exit and it is a nice walk past temples, the fish market and shipyards.

There is a cafe which sells drinks and coffee but there is not much choice in terms of food. It is a nice place to sit though and in good weather you could sit out and enjoy the views over the entrance to Victoria Harbour.
