“closed Thursdays”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

Not a big museum so it's good for a few hours, just don't show up on a Thursday. Currently exhibiting 2012 contemporary art awards, a lot of interesting works. Calligraphy history section is lovely. You can take photos in most areas but not the porcelain-ware.

“Please note : closed on Thursdays”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

Yep…turned up on a Thursday thinking that it would be quite safe, but was sadly turned away. Decided to go back the next day due to a special Porcelain exhibition jointly held by 3 museums. Had a very enjoyable afternoon appreciating Chinese paintings and understanding the significance of animals on porcelains. You can rent the audio at HK$10 but commentary was only for a small fraction of the exhibits. For me, it was better than nothing.

“Great Showing of Up and Coming Artist”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2013

Currently they have a show of the up and coming HK artist. Wide range of art exhibited in the show. Nicely laid out. Give yourself about 2 - 3 hours.

“Art Museum in a central location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2013 via mobile

Let the other tourists shop in busy Tsim Sha Tsui and head to the Hong Kong art museum. Ticket is cheap as all museum in Hong Kong. Several temporary exhibitions, both ancient and modern. Good view on Victoria Harbour.

“Museum that reflects this city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2013

We spent more time than we thought we would at the HK Museum of Art, owing to its fascinating and well curated exhibits. Coming from London, with its world-class museums, I would say the best thing about this museum was the lack of crowds. Here, you get to see superb Chinese art without having to fight for viewing space. The atmosphere is calm and the descriptions of what you are viewing are very clear.

The exhibitions on offer incorporate both ancient (calligraphy, scrolls, pottery) and modern (photographs, installations, mixed-media). As such, it reflects what Hong Kong is - a thoroughly modern city which still retains its traditions.

As in all public museums in HK, hygiene is taken very seriously. We are told that the place is disinfected 6 to 8 times daily. There is a small book shop where you can purchase exhibition catalogues. Of special mention must be the women's toilet (not sure about the men's toilet) where the doors have an image taken from an ancient scroll printed on it, thus giving them a very unique edge.
