In the olden days of hk one could see these places all around with people bringing their song bird with them in restaurants and parks. This has a bit of history feel to it. And it is worth a visit since you are passing by the flower market to get there. People are friendly with many small traditional cages for birds being made. Sadly, the heritage of hk is being forced out by big developers so this place might not be arround for much longer.

I should imagine that this attraction / market is not everyone's cup-of-tea but it is a fantastic slice of Chinese culture and also provides the opportunity to view some wild birds, albeit they are confined to small cages. The song from the birds is quite remarkable and it is also amazing to watch the local sparrows feeding on any opportunity that may arise. Go with an open mind and remember to combine your visit to the Bird Market with a trip to the very pretty Flower Market.

Went to see this must do thing, but once there was not happy at the way the birds were kept. You had cages as small as two square feet with as many as 30-50 small birds. It was cruel and although I wouldn't class myself as an animal lover I did find it distasteful and cruel. However, you must see it to believe it.

We were following a guide book DIY walking tour of several markets in Kowloon and this was on our itinerary.

It is actually both a Bird Garden and a Bird Market. It isn't very big, but is nicely set out. There are all sorts of live birds for sale, and every accessory and food that a bird could possibly need being sold from various stalls. Some of the cages are beautifully ornate with beautifully high prices to match. As birds are popular and much loved pets, there were several older men there showing off their own birds.

There are some pretty bird mosaic pictures on the wall of the building next to the sitting area and at the entrance there is also a long and pretty mural with a bird theme.

It is actually next door to the Flower Market and borders Flower Market Rd making it convenient to visit both markets together. It is shown on the free Tourist Board Hong Kong map, highlighted in yellow, as is Flower Market and Goldfish Market together with a few others.

Not a priority if on a first visit to HK, nor if time is short, but if, like us, you have visited before and are looking for something different, consider combining a short visit to both markets.

We entered at the junction of Flower Market Rd and Prince Edward Rd West. Nearest MTR is Prince Edward Rd a few blocks away.
