“The best place to stay in HK”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

After staying in a variety of places on HK island and in Kowloon, my wife and I have decided that this is our permanent home-away-from home. We come to HK from the US to visit my wife's family in North Point. The Garden View is very well situated and convenient. The rooms are efficiently laid out. The staff is exceptionally good: efficient and courteous. We particularly commend Mr. Eric Ying, Front Office Manager and his staff. And the price can't be beat.
On the side street going down hill from the hotel is an excellent veggie restaurant (3rd floor), and a terrific Chinese massage/reflexology establishment (6th floor).

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor. A little more expensive but the view is great.

When we arrived to the hotel, we were greeted with very professional reception staff. The room we stayed in had an awesome view. We saw the whole of Admiralty and Central from the back. It was stunning! The room had HEAT- which is quite rare for a HK hotel but a necessity during the time of our stay. The bedding was neat AT FIRST. The location is situated near Admiralty, Wan Chai, Mid-Levels and Causeway Bay but prepare for taxi-ing here and there.

We booked the hotel a day ahead and was not aware of the hotel facilities (ie gym, pool, restaurants..,). There were no introductory leaflets in the room. The first night, the hotel seemed very clean. However, the next night onward - we were let down by alot of things from the house keeping staff. * no toiletry renewal * rough toilet rolls despite the highly charged room; doesnt match up * wrinkled bedding * the staff ignored our unfolded clothing on the bed and placed it unfolded on the bedside table * no robes in the room to keep up warm after a shower * one day out of our four days, the toilet roll was just left on the bed while the holder in the toilet was empty. * our boxed tissue for the room was taken away * no combs * TWO people were only given ONE set of toiletries * Plastic bags were ignored ... I'll just leave it there. We've lived in many hotels across the globe but this room service has made me the most furious/ ANGRY!! Thank God for the great room view or else I would really sue for this. >> My birthday falls on one of the days of my stay. I am sure the staff noticed it. The hotel DID nothing. Unlike Beijing's Novtel Hotel who gave me a bouquet of roses; a birthday card and mini champagne.

I have stayed at the Garden View a couple of years ago, and booked again. I think it's worth reviewing again as things can change.

This remains a good value option. The rooms are now a little dated in decor but they are a decent size. Double bed not a king bed though. There is a small bath tub as well as shower which you don't always get in new middle priced accommodation. Lots of storage and drawer space. Tea and coffee making facilities. Room lighting is good.

Hong Kong was experiencing a cold snap when I visited and the Heat setting on the air conditioner was not effective but the hotel did provide me with a heater (though it was pretty beat up) This is not a common state of affairs - but can affect Hong Kong any time from January through to March.

The restaurant attached to the hotel is pretty Chinese oriented - and may not be to all Westerners' taste. Breakfast was not included in my room rate anyway.

Location is an issue - as it is near the top of Garden Road which is a steep one. Walking down into Central through the Botanical Gardens is pleasant and I recommend it. Walking back up the hill not
so pleasant. However it is a flagfall taxi fare from Central (22HK$) or the 25 Bus from Admiralty takes a few minutes and costs HK4.30. Getting back into Central the same bus route is useful. If you want to go on into Wanchai or Causeway Bay, or the other direction and to the Central Ferry Piers it's a bit harder on the bus. You will need the 12A for Central and the 23 for Wanchai. You can catch them just up the road from Garden Terrace - but the bus stop is really difficult to get to. It can be done a bit easier if you cheat and risk your life by crossing where you're not supposed to. An easier bet is to cross the road by the footbridge and walk down the hill a bit to catch them at the next bus stop down. It's a bit further but probably safer and it's downhill.

Front desk staff are pleasant. Clientele of the hotel is very mixed. There is a fitness centre which is quite well equipped. The pool is closed in the winter months though.

I got a good rate on this hotel and in a city where accommodation is very expensive it is always worth considering.

Room Tip: There are 21 floors - but not much to choose between the rooms.

We stayed 3 nights in the hotel. The staff were prompt & efficient. The room was clean and the view was awesome on the 11th floor, especially at night.

When we arrived at the hotel, the lobby was full of Chinese New Year decorations and we found it quite lovely to see the kiat kiat oranges. The overall atmosphere was quiet and relaxing.

It was easy to get to and from the hotel once you get the hang of where the bus stop is and where you want to go. The Peak Tram terminus is just down the road ( walk from the hotel on the Garden Road side and go down to Kennedy Heights. Turn left and you'll find a path called Tram Pathway and just follow that to the Terminus. Going to Central is easy from Kennedy Heights and ride the 12A Bus. If you want to go to the Mid Levels, take Bus 23 and go down at the Sun Yat Sen Museum. The mid-level escalators are just few steps from the bus stop.

I have no complaints but probably a suggestion. I come from a country where smiling is as easy as breathing. I noticed that not a lot of people smile in Hong Kong. However, if you are in the hospitality or customer service business (which we and my husband are), it really goes a long way to be accommodating and friendly. :) It makes your customers come back. It's not what you do or what you say that people remember, it's how you made them feel.

Room Tip: Request for rooms on the higher floors so you can enjoy the view. The hotel only has free wifi in t...

In a city where accommodation is very pricey, The Garden View Hotel is inexpensive. The cost of a room is approx £60 per night for a double room excluding breakfast. It has Wifi free of charge in reception but is charged extra If required in your bedroom, therefor everybody tends to congregate downstairs and as there is limited seating it probably means you will to stand to deal with emails etc. The hotel is in the business area so,there are not many shops or food outlets close -by, but is only a ten minute walk to the tram station to take you to the Peak. Rooms are basic but clean and have toiletries, hair dryer, safe, and air conditioning. On a budget it is a useful place to consider.

Room Tip: Whist limited, there are some rooms which have views of the bay

The hotel is modern and clean with attentive staff.
Our room was a decent size, clean, and had a fantastic view of the Hong Kong city skyline which was the highlight of this space.
The buffet breakfast had a good selection and decent quality but the staff were a bit slow at setting up. I would wait 30-45 minutes after open in future.

Taxis were super cheap to get around, so no problem that the hotel was slightly removed from the main downtown area. It was right next to the free botanical zoo park which is definitely worth a visit, and only a short walk to Soho.

Convenient location, great hotel, good value for money, and would stay there again.

We email Hotel on best way to get to Hotel from Airport, we took the Express to Central, bought tickets at Airport HK($160) then taxi to Hotel ($39 which included $5 ea bag, we had 2) Departing, same trip, same bags by taxi ($46) Might I add the Hotels costing was incorrect, they need to update their records.

On arrival our room wasn't ready at 1.45pm, check in was at 2pm. After 10min I asked for a high floor room if possible, they up graded us to room 1811, 2 single beds which we were fine with, it had view of brick wall, great view of the city and botanical gardens which was opposite in lounge room. The lights at night was amazing. The room was clean and very spacious, bathroom huge with separate bath/ shower, kitchen small and fridge good size, no free WIFI in room only in reception area which was small. Safe in room.
Supermarket down the hill a bit which we bought breakfast cereals milk etc handy and good bakery. We walked a lot, a local small green bus 1A picked up on the same St as Hotel, ($4.60 ea to Central).

Negative was I thought the reception staff could have been more helpful, friendlier and freely giving out local knowledge and information. Bus and train timetables would have been nice.

If you don't mind walking the big hill after a day out this Hotel would be fine, it's nice to look at the city from a distance and not be in the heart of it.

Room Tip: Room 1811 looked over city and gardens,if you don't mind 2 single beds which were firm but comfy...
