We always stay here in Hong Kong because it is walking distance from the home of some very close friends of ours who live at mid-level. I like luxury hotels, and though not anywhere near luxury, I gave this hotel 5 stars because for the price, this hotel is really nice and probably one of the best values in Hong Kong. The rooms and beds are small (2 twins if you want 2 separate beds), but the hotel is very clean, and the staff is courteous and helpful.

The hotel is in a great location --- just a quick cab ride (I think $8) from the IFC center where the airport train and some nice shops and restaurants are. The city zoo is just next door, and a grocery store is downstairs. In addition, you can walk 6 blocks to get to a larger children's playground and a walk-through aviary. I think the escalators also get you pretty close to the hotel, and if you know where you are going, you can walk through the zoo to the hotel. You can easily hail a cab.

Downside is that of course, this is not a full-service hotel (no porters, but maid service is pretty good). Breakfast is good, not great --- they have a basic congee, croissants, sausage, eggs, etc. The hotel is a quick cab (I think $3 to $4) to the Shangri-la hotel and the tram, but I didn't see any restaurants nearby, except for a very basic restaurant right next door.

I would definitely recommend to anyone that needs/wants to stay in mid-level or is looking for a value hotel in Hong Kong ---

Many years ago (2003?) my employer booked me in this hotel for a 5 night stay. The rooms were clean, modern and the amenities at the hotel were good. Well, fast-forward to 2013 and the hotel is as modern and as clean as it was 10 years earlier. Also, this is probably one of the most reasonably priced hotels in Hong Kong. Good value, good location (across from the botanical garden & zoo and just up the road from The Peak Tram), and amenities. What more could you ask for?

Room Tip: I think that all of the rooms are good, some have better views but they all seem to have a view.

What a great little hotel! Very cozy and clean. Perfect for a simple getaway. The window of the room is the best feature, looking over some of the skyline of Hong Kong.

Take a cab from Central subway station if you have mid to heavy sized suitcases as the hills and stairs leading to the hotel are rather unkind. But if you are looking for a workout, then go for it and walk. Take the exit near the airport express when getting off at Central station as it is closest to the hotel.

The gym is actually decent, with 5 cardio machines, free weights, and a universal weight machine. There is also a tv set in there.

Room Tip: Be prepared to climb a rather steep hill to get there! Or take a cab

Really debated writing this; to me this is simply the best value and property in Hong Kong and something I prefer keeping a secret! Having stayed numerous times now, the rooms are efficient, very clean and all non-smoking. Located opposite the HK City Zoo the deluxe room has a great view, lights at night and a view of the harbor. The Aviary is a block off and if you have an octopus card you can catch the tram to the Peak just down the road thus avoiding the long lines. The mid-levels (antiques and restaurants) are a short walk away through the zoo and there is a grocery store next door. Check in/out can be slow, but for the value, this is a gem.

Room Tip: Go with a deluxe room for the view and queen-sized bed. The higher the better; the end units area s...

Amazing view and Very comfy beds. Good location but you have to do a little bit of climbing or Taxi. The only but is the breakfast: not much choice and if you come late you won't find much to eat.
I woul stay here again. Make sure you book higherFloor with a view. Enjoy this amazing city.

I had to book last minute for a business trip and the price for the YWCA was far more reasonable here than at other properties. The room, while neither special nor spectacular was perfectly functional and well maintained. Service staff were swift and efficient. There is a very well stocked supermarket 5 minutes away should one need extra things (as the YWCA does not provide everything in the bathroom; perfectly understandable for a hotel in this category). The location is excellent and very near to Central; plus the hotel is just on the other side of the road from the Botanical Gardens, which is lovely. The one snag is the road is extremely steep as you reach the mid levels so anyone with walking difficulties might want to think twice.

Due to foul up, the day before I was about to leave for a Holiday to Hong Kong, I received an email that the booking for the Hotel that I was supposed to be staying in had been cancelled and I had to book a new Hotel. As an Orthodox Jew and wanting to be near a Synagogue, I needed it to be in the Mid-Levels area and this only left the Garden View Hotel –YWCA.
I ordered the Queen sized room ( i.e.middle priced room – not the Suite and not the standard room) and, price wise, it was not bad ( about $150 US/night including breakfast and Tax).
We arrived (me together with my wife) on a Thursday afternoon and were quickly sorted out with our room. We were given breakfast vouchers (that, actually we didn’t use), and within a couple of minutes were ready to go to our room on the 10th floor ( of 20). The people at reception were very courteous, spoke good English, and there was even a guy in the entrance area to the hotel who generally helped people with luggage, pressed the button open for the lift etc.
Hotel rooms in Hong Kong are normally pretty small. This one was not. I have stayed in smaller and also bigger, but overall, there was a double bed with bedside tables ( and enough room to get dressed either side of the bed). There was a small wardrobe with space to hang up clothes and a couple of shelves and drawers, as well as a safe. There was a desk and chair and a separate “bar” counter with a shelf that contained a kettle and a few cups ( Mugs for hot drinks and glasses for cold drinks, and tea, coffee, sugar etc.), as well as mini bar in the cupboard underneath. The bathroom was small, but not tiny. There was a sink, toilet and small bath with Shower curtain. Bathroom goodies included complimentary toothbrushes, soap, Shampoo, Body cream and shower cap( these were replaced each day together with the towels and the bathroom scrubbed). There was a hair dryer as well. The whole place was SPOTLESSLY clean!
The view from the window of the room was fantastic. The whole of Hong Kong Central was lit up in front of us, as well as slithers of Victoria Harbor between the skyscrapers. Below the building on the other side of Garden Road was The Zoo and Botanical gardens.
Besides the view, there was a bonus of being directly opposite the Zoo/Botanical gardens. As a public place, there is free government Wifi reception. It was not amazing – i.e. SKYPE was pretty choppy, but for downloading emails and basic surfing, it was fine. With Free Wifi almost the standard in many places in the Far east, it is strange that the Hotel charges 100HKD per 24 hours for it. In the reception of the hotel, Wifi is free, and therefore people are sitting in the chairs in the Lobby all hours of the day with computers and Smartphones open, checking emails and speaking on SKYPE.
The Hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Admiralty MTR station ( going downhill) but about 15 minutes hard walking uphill. Had I been by myself, I would have continued to walk up and down, however after a while my wife got tired and we ended up getting a cab up and down (we never waited more than 3 minutes for a cab outside the Hotel). The cost of the cab to the MTR was about 20-25 HKD depending upon the time of day and traffic. To walk down to Central or Hong Kong Station took about 20 minutes or so, going through the Zoo/Botanical gardens and going downhill. There are pros and cons for the location.
For me, being VERY close to one synagogue (3 doors away) and a 15 minute walk to another, the situation was great. The staff are also familiar with what to do on Sabbath with regards to the Lift and door opening (just tell them before!).
As we have certain dietary issues and don’t eat the breakfast, it was very convenient having a well stocked Supermarket (Fusion- Park and Buy) underneath the building. We found all that we required here and the prices weren’t bad. As the soft drinks and water in the Hotel minibar were so expensive, this was a life saver.
We tried the Hotel restaurant for breakfast one morning, and to be honest, it looked well stocked with a mixture of European and Asian foods, but we were not going to eat there.

Summary
The Hotel had great service, both in the reception and in the rooms. It was extremely clean. The views amazing, location had its Pros and Cons. If I am in Hong Kong again, I would seriously consider staying there again.

Room Tip: Worth the extra money getting a Garden view room
