Went with three friends in April. Accidentally went on a weekend so the bus ride there took a while as it is also on the way to the beach Big Wave Bay. It was a great hike though with some incredible views. Do your research before on how to get there and how long you'd like to hike but it was a great experience. We did the entire ~8K to the beach and were not disappointed by any of it.

there was no map up there,

From Shau Kei Wan MTR station, take bus 9 down from the bus terminal. If you're lucky you'll see other hikers on the bus, get off where they get off. Follow the signs after that, there's only one path and rarely when the path splits into two, there will be more signs so that you're never lost. Views are stunning, visit when the weather is cooler and conducive for hiking. I just went in the middle of August/Summer/blazing heat so not a good idea but oh well. Watch out for the terrain, while not exactly mountaineering, there are some parts of the path that I would not bring young children to hike. Try starting from the South and ending off at Big Wave Beach, after a hike as strenuous as that, the beach is a very welcome respite.

The Dragon's Back is a hidden gem of Hong Kong. It is a relatively easy hike after the initial 30 min uphill walk. Once you get to the top, you can enjoy the remarkable views of Hong Kong's nature.

I highly recommend packing your swimmers as the hike ends at Shek O beach. There are a few small local restaurants for a cold beer and a bowl of noodles after the hike as well as shower and bathroom facilities free for the public to use.

Peak summer should be avoided unless you go very early in the morning and avoid going on foggy days otherwise you won't see anything. A well worn in pair of trainers with decent grip is good enough for this hike. Plenty of water, sunscreen and mosquito repellent is highly recommended. The whole hike should take around 1hr 30min - 2hr at a casual pace.

Loved the views and the elevated paths. The climb is not too bad - in all not too challenging if you like a hike.
