The Empire Hotel Wan Chai
Ranked #124 of 721 Hotels in Hong Kong
Reviewed April 17, 2012

Pros
-Excellent location, in Wan Chai, close to MTR and shops
-Modern hotel but room is a little tired
-Upper floor room, quiet, with view of the harbour

Cons
-Small room, cramped hallway
-Very expensive internet

Despite it's flaws, it's good value considering its location. I would consider staying there again.

This hotel has a good location, but absolutely nothing more. The rooms are very small, very old and theres a smell of mold. Bathrooms are uncleane and rather revolting. Aircondition only worked in 2 settings; off or extremely cold. And I almost forgot, the sound isolation is terrible, which is bad since the Hotel is located in a noise area.

For the prise you can do much, much better.....

Reception staff is friendly and efficient, rooms are small but comfortable. Downside: no closet and decent drawers, so you have to hang your clothes on a rack and cannot really unpack unless you want everything laying around on one tiny shelf.
Bathroom is quite small, looking at is from a positive viewpoint would be to say that is very efficient. It starts to show that the hotel has been around for a while; mouldy corners, smelly shower curtain. But still acceptable.
Bed is quite comfortable with enough pillows and the tv is of good size.
My laptop died on me, but the staff was very friendly and provided one for me to use. Compliments here!
Two downpoints:
First of all the breakfast is pretty awful; it is expensive and there is no fresh fruit or juice, both are from a can or powder. The bread is of poor quality, soggy and dry at the same time. Accross the street is a coffee shop that sells good coffee, tea, juice and bread. So after 2 attempts I went there.
Second of all the hotel is located in the bustling center of Wanchai, the bar area where everybody goes to party until late into the night. And since a lot of bars are open on the streetside, this involves a lot of screaming and music. When you're not part of the party crowd and can sleep your way into the day, but have early morning meetings like normal people with a job to do, this is not the place to stay. Not even on the 18th floor. Consider spending a few tenners more and sleep in decently isolated hotel rooms.
All in all, if you're there to party or if you are a very easy sleeper there is no reason why you should not stay here. For others, consider your options or bring a stack of ear plugs.

We stayed at the Empire Wanchai during the rugby sevens and it was a MAJOR disappointment, we will definitely NOT stay there again.

There is next to no chance of sleeping at this hotel, due to the noise from the bars directly below, there is NO double-glazing, the bars close at 4am and the punters start drifting away about 30 minutes later, you cannot even hear the TV turned up full because it's so loud.

Another major disappointment was the 21st floor was under renovations, which meant no pool and no gym (they did attempt a make-shift gym in a hotel room), there is no compensation for this, even if you booked well in advance like we did.

The internet is well behind current standards, no WiFi and cabled internet is expensive. Also there was mould in the very small bathroom (probably normal size by HK standards).

Whilst the location is excellent and a very good concierge team, there are many other hotels in Hong Kong and best to look elsewhere for sleeping options.

As above, couldn't ask for a better location for the nightlife and restaurants and everywhere in HK is close anyway. Staff were great and for the money I thought it offered good value. Certainly not 5 star, possible a good solid 3.5. If they upgraded the bathrooms then i would be a lot happier. They do let the place down a little.

Good tip is there is a brilliant coffee house across the street ( Pacific Coffee) and a Tailor across the corner where he does suits in two days.

I would stay there there again.
