Best of both worlds

Staying in Mui Wo was a great alternative to staying in HK, and the city is only a ferry ride away. The hotel location is great - a stone's throw away from the beach, and I really enjoyed the ambience. Staff were helpful and friendly and happy to answer our questions. The rooms may not be five star, but could easily overlook this because of our general enjoyment of the hotel. Hope to be back soon!

Prepare to be blasted back to the past in these 1950's style rooms. If you do not wish to see how a carpet also works as an iron stand then make sure you get the 'renovated' rooms and take a step into the 80's (make sure you don't pay more). The pool is clean, the 'renovated' room was clean and reception helpful. Food very average & very misleading (if accurate at all) photos. Overall not entirely terrible but in major need of better management and a cash injection in more needy areas.

I just came back from a weekend trip to Mui Wo and really enjoyed it. Loved the atmosphere there. As for the hotel, you should ask for a renovated room otherwise it is really not very pleasent. At first we were booked into one of the non-renovated rooms. So we had a look and it was seriously not ok for that price at all. Stained carpet, very old and dirty interior and worst of all very bad smell of old cigarettes in the room. We immediately asked if we can change the room and the staff was very understanding and helpful. The new rooms are absolutely nice, clean and modern. We were told that the whole hotel is getting a makeover because they are quite aware of the state of the old rooms!

I was very disappointed in my room here. I was placed in the "South" building and although I had been forewarned that this was not the best wing in this hotel - I did not expect such a poor room. The carpeting, furnishings, walls, decor, etc. are worn and outdated to a ridiculous extent. The toilet leaked, the nightstand had a lighted clock display that did not show the correct time but blinked brightly all night long. I'm not a "difficult" traveler, and in fact have never written such an unfavorable review. But this place is so overpriced for the quality that it is an embarrassment to Hong Kong.

Room tip: Do NOT accept a room in the older part of the building. They are only a bit less expensive - and very bad.

The Silvermine Beach Hotel is an unusual place for Hong Kong. It's an older hotel, in a small village, right next to a beach. It's quiet and feels far from the city, even though it's just 30 minutes by ferry from Central. There are many good hikes through the countryside. It's close enough to the village of Meiwo and linked to good transportation that you can get a variety of food, from Cantonese and fresh seafood, to Indian or Turkish. I stayed here with family and friends and we all loved it.

Stayed there for 2 nights. The hotel was dated and the carpet was dirty. The new wing was markedly better but cost a little bit more. However, this was a hotel in some "rural" area of Hong Kong, so one has to dial down the expectation. The location was wonderful. It is right next to the beach. There was a buffet dinner on Saturday night and you really have to be there right from the start. They could run out of food! The food was only so so and was very crowded. However, having lunch in the hotel restaurant turned out to be reasonably priced and very decent quality.

The staff was somewhat helpful but not very competent and management seemed to be a big mess. Maybe, it was more relax next to the beach. We reserved a room with two twin beds so that 3 people can fit but were given a queen. Had to argue and fight to get an roll away bed (all booked) and then argued and fight for them not charging us hundreds of dollars extra. They even claimed they ran out of comforters! At the time we went there, the best deal is to go with groupon like purchase but we missed that. We booked with a travel agency in Hong Kong and that was okay. The worst deal was to get credit card discount booking directly from the hotel.

All in all, if you want to stay near a beach and don't want to take chances with small guest houses on out-lying islands, this can be a reasonable choice.

Room tip: Pick the new wing if you can.
