We always tend to stay at higher end hotels on our vacations, but on this one occasion, Sheraton was the only option we had on our stay in HK. We have a 5 and 3 year old, and most other high-end hotels required us to book 2 rooms (weird rule, but we had no choice). This was the only half-decent hotel allowing us to stay in one room.
Well, not sure where to start with my rant. First the positives (rather, the ONLY positive):
- Service - quality of service offered by the staff is impeccable. Very friendly, responsive, follow up nicely on requests, and overall very welcoming.
That's where the good ends. Now for my rant:
- Room size - ridiculously small. Just to give you an example, we ordered in-room dining one night. The waiter was unable to fit the table between the bed and the TV. Eventually he just kept everything on the study desk and split. With two suitcases taking up the space on one side of the bed, we were basically jumping over stuff just to get to the bathroom. Horrendous!
- Restaurant - The Cafe restaurant serves buffet breakfast and lunch (and I think dinner too). The spread was decent, fairly standard. But the waiting line spread all the way across from outside the restaurant, across the entire reception desk, to the elevators (on all 3 days when we were there). We seriously thought that there was a Black Friday sale going on inside. One of the morning, we basically had to go out for breakfast because our kids were starving and couldn't wait. It looks like these guys do brisk travel-agent bookings, and are unable to handle the demand. Increase the number of tables for cryin out loud!!
- Our older son developed a rash from a mosquito bite in the room. We asked for an in-house doctor, they said it would cost HK$1800. When I lost it and said that they should offer it for free since they had mosquitoes in the room, they said our other option was to go to the doctor ourselves (next block) and he would charge HK$400 there. The doctor later told us that his fee was the same at the clinic as it was at hte hotel (HK$400). So I guess the hotel wanted to pocket the HK$1400 themselves. Nice way of doing business - first infect your rooms with bugs, then charge customers for getting treated.
I can go on and on about how ridiculous and Motel-6 like this hotel is. Bottomline, if you are on a budget and have absolutely no other choice, give this a try. Otherwise there are better hotels in the vicinity that would offer better service. Never again will I ever stay at this shabby joint.
