“Nice with some drawbacks”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

In my opinion, this hotel have same pros and cons.

Pros (+)

1. Location is in the heart of Mongkok. Connected directly to Grand Century Place Shopping Mall and MTR East Mongkok Station

2. House keeping services is nice and really on time every day.

3. Room is clean, spacious and newly renovated. So the interior is really nice.

4. 2 Double beds (Queen size) give more room for traveler with family to sleep better.

5. Heated swimming pool is the best place to hang out or relax after a rush day in Hongkong

Cons (-)

1. This hotel always packed with a lot of people. Many tourist from all over the region stay at this hotel, so expect some time (between 20-30 minutes) for check in and check out

2. Hotel is connected to shopping mall (which is nice), but you might find that on the same path with people that doesn't stay at the hotel.

Well, i guess with this kind of budget, this hotel give us good services BUT NOT top one. Maybe we will try some other hotel on our next trip to Hongkong

We stayed at Royal Plaza 2nd - 10th January 2014. The hotel was beautifully renovated and the location was conveniently located as it was attached to Grand century plaza shopping centre, which has a a really nice food court for cheap and healthy breakfasts / lunches, and close to both Mong Kok east and Mong Kok MTR stations. The service however was quite lacking on several fronts. Upon arrival we were not greeted by anyone and no help was offered for our luggage, which didn't really bother us but then we made our way towards the check-in desk, and stood there at the front for a while waiting for someone free to acknowledge us but we were ignored until I spoke up and asked to be checked in. In short the front desk staff were not friendly or helpful and did not attempt to mask their lack of enthusiasm for their job or customer service in general. Whenever we asked the concierge about sightseeing information or transport details they were not very helpful and always seemed rushed to be finished with us even though they were not busy and we were the only people at their desk. Despite having the do not disturb light on we were still disrupted every morning by a phone call asking us when we will leave our room for housekeeping to come in. Considering shops don't open until 10.30 or 11am is it that uncommon for holidaying guests to sleep in past 11?! The toilet in our bathroom had a constant foul smell and during the full extent of our 8 night stay housekeeping would not replace our used tea cups and we ended up having to call them to have them changed. Disappointingly we received far better service from L'Hotel at Causeway Bay, which also happens to be cheaper. If it weren't for the hotel being newly renovated and the convenient location we wouldn't have enjoyed our stay there.

Reviewed January 9, 2014

We booked the Plaza Grand room for 6 nights in mid-December. 4 days before we left for HK we emailed the hotel to request for an early check-in since our flight would land in HK at 9.35am and I needed the room earlier for its wi-fi and quiet environment due to an urgent matter. There were some things that I wasn't satisfied with in the hotel's reply aside from the main issue of the room, but rather how 80% of the reply by a certain manager consisted of potential charges and talk of $$ which I found irritating.

Anyway, when we arrived at around 11am, the check in took about 15 minutes and thankfully they managed to have a room for us. Also as I was celebrating my birthday during my stay in HK, the counter informed us that they would be giving us a complimentary cake, a move which I definitely appreciated. Our room was on the 17th floor.

The room was large, spacey, equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine, two bottles of complimentary water and a boiling kettle, a baywindow and a flatscreen tv on the wall as well.
The bed was very comfy and sheets kept me warm enough, I had great sleeps for all 6 nights. The space in front of the tv was ample enough to place our two pieces of luggage and I can't stress enough how thankful am I for the size of the room. The desk area was well lit and a safe was provided. Behind the desk was a single armchair and small table. But what I loved most about the room was the free wi-fi offered and how incredibly fast it was.

The bathroom came with a tub and a standing shower. As the room was newly renovated, the bathroom looked very new as well and tons of toiletries were provided by the hotel - comb, shower cap, shower essences, sewing kit, nail filer, toothbrush, and many others. The taps and faucet were easy to use for switching between hot/cold/warm water. One thing I would say though, is whenever we entered the room with there would be this slightly damp smell coming out from the air vents, but the smell quickly disappeared whenever we turned the airconditioner on.

On my birthday we were given a complimentary mango cheesecake by the hotel and the female manager offered to take a photo of us with the cake. About 15 mins later she brought the photo up in a standing frame to us and the very next day we found the same photo with the same frame on the bedside table. They gave us two copies of the same photo and frame. Thanks a lot guys.

Housekeeping service was punctual and done well daily. They would drop by our room around 11am every morning, whenever we returned to our room at night the empty shampoo and shower bottles would be replaced by new ones and towels were all replaced promptly. Things were also kept in order, there was one housekeeping lady whom we always saw when we left our room in the morning who would always greet us with a smile without fail, this kind of small gestures really go a long way and I really appreciate her friendliness.

Security wise, the hotel did an excellent job as well. Only hotel guests with the room keycard were able to enter the hotel's premises from the adjacent shopping centre and be able to use the elevator. Also, we noticed everytime we returned to the hotel later than 9.30pm, there was a lady standing beside the lift lobby asking people for their room numbers before they were allowed to use the elevators. I felt adequately safe during my stay there.

The location certainly isn't the best among hotels in HK, but it is connected to Mongkok East MTR on the light blue line and Grand Century Place, the largest shopping mall in the Mongkok area. I visited the mall often and loved the place since it offered so many restaurants and eateries, not to mention its vibrant atmosphere. Mongkok East MTR might be a little inconvenient for people who are going to areas located on other lines, but it is only a short walk from the mall to Mongkok MTR on a flyover, we did that many times since we always had to take from Mongkok to reach areas we wanted to go to.

Convenience wise, there's no need to worry at all. We had such an easy time travelling between the airport and the hotel and vice versa. At the airport we simply took the airport express to Kowloon Station where the free shuttle bus K5 was available to take us directly to the doorstep of Royal Plaza Hotel.

Based on my near flawless experience with the hotel and the room I give Royal Plaza 5 stars, but there are certain points I noticed about the hotel which I would like to point out despite my rating. Firstly, the attitude of the reception needs to improve. During check in and check out I realised how expressionless most, if not all of them were and even when we said Thank You there wasn't any response or smile on their faces.

Secondly, as we were about to leave the hotel for the airport we asked one of the hotel staff who was directing traffic outside the hotel about the location of the shuttle bus. As the bus arrived he voluntarily carried our luggage up the bus for us and we were a little surprised and thanked him afterward, but he seemed hesitant to leave the bus until he saw that we had no intention (or rather, forgot to) of tipping him for his effort. In fact as we came into contact with different staff of the hotel, we did sort of get this "tip-expecting" vibe from them.

Overall Royal Plaza did an excellent job in offering great comfort and security for hotel guests and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. I wouldn't hesitate to return for a second stay next time, oh yes and kudos to the concierge for being such helpful great people.

Good point:
This is not the first time to stay in this hotel, but this is the first time after renovation.

(1) The bed, 1.5m, comfortable.

(2) Free Wifi is a big plus

(3) Location -

(a) Fa Yuen street is beside the shopping mall and it is a day market there, a lot to buy with reasonable prices.

(b) Also there are a lot of local restaurants around the area.

(c) Connected to a shopping mall.

(4) Out door hot water Jacuzzi is at excellent temperature (@ 41 C degree) especially during winter.

Bad point:
(1) The hotel was under construction during my visit (Christmas 2013), the lobby was dark and small, main entrance is blocked, does not look very nice but I believe this will be settled once the construction is done.

(2) I have a feeling the room is not as cozy as before after renovation, room has become smaller, small kitchen has gone...

(3) Toilet has a big window that you can see thru from the room, whatever you do in the toilet the person outside can see what you are doing, this has annoying me a bit.

(4) You can not lock the toilet, there is no lock on the sliding door at all, so my children always play around when I was taking my shower. I think the design is a failure and is a BIG minus there, because the transparent window and un-lock door serve no purpose at all.

(5) There will be no view from the window, all you can see is just street and buildings

Overall rating is not as good as before the renovation.

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. They have just completed their renovation and the rooms are just awesome. Location wise is simply splendid as the mrt is just 5mins away, and next to it is a shopping mall. There's a food court located on the 3rd floor of the mall so food is never an issue.
