“Old hotel but with an excellent location...”
Reviewed September 3, 2010

Old hotel but with an excellent location. The size of the room is reasonable. Bathroom could do with a bit of renovation. My only disappointment is the service from the front desk. I made a point to call a day ahead knowing our flight would be really late to ask for non smoking rooms. But it really is no guarantee unless you INSIST on it upon check-in. One member still ended up in a smoking room. SIGH!

There are many good things one can say about City Garden Hotel-- first, it is on Hong Kong Island, right above a metro, in an authentic Chinese neighbourhood (no vast Chanel or Louis Vuitton etc. shops here, and since I don't shop in those at home I don't want them when I travel). There were good facilities: gym, swimming pool, sauna; business centre, and excellent breakfast (where you could choose between and combine Western, Japanese, and Chinese options). Room service food was relatively cheap and good. The staff, with a little nudging were very helpful.

But there is a real problem with the air quality in the hotel, which affected for me the sleep quality. I think the filters on the airconditioning system need to be changed/cleaned more frequently. There is a smell of mildew in the air, and I suspect that this has penetrated the curtains and upholstery. Some money and time should be spent on this. This has the potential to be a real luxury hotel, but is just slipping under the bar.

Hotel located in a good spot , not far from city centre.
Transportation facilities near MTR Diamond Hill.
The Hotel is pretty good , location surrounding not so nice but still acceptable.
Not for the luxurious traveller , not for budget travellers , good for business travellers.
Rooms small , clean.
Breakfast overpriced (Starbucks very near) , Dining also overpriced especially considering the quality of food.

A great hotel located near Fortress Hill station!

As there was a slight hiccup when we first checked in, they decided to give us free internet access throughout the stay which was greatly welcomed.

Room was clean and spacious but the mattress was a bit worn and sub-par.

Location wise, it's a short 5 min walk to Fortress Hill station while 7-11 was just next to the hotel. There are also many small restaurants in walking distance from the hotel. All in all, a convenient location.

We stayed at this place for three nights. I have to say that the comments here and the hotel's website does not do it justice. I wasn't expecting anything nearly as good as this for the money we paid (£50 per night approx), if I'm honest, when we arrived I thought we were at the wrong hotel. The staff were super helpful, the room was clean and spacious and the facilities were excellend. Good links with the MTR and the bus from the airport (the hotel is at stop 19 I believe, about 1 hour from the airport).

If you want negatives - This place isn't in the heart of the shopping / tourist area but it's a short walk away. If you want that expect to pay more, simple as that. The Harbour Grand Hotel is two blocks away but double the price.
There aren't great views from the hotel, it's just a great hotel.

Hotel is perfect if you want to relax and unwind after a long day of sightseeing and walking. Our room was located on the 18th floor which looks newly renovated. THe bathroom may be a bit small for western travelers though it is very clean and well maintained. Our room was always made up and tidy when we get back from our day trip, even without special request. Our towels were also changed daily without special request either. I loved it! Sheets were clean and bed was soft and great to sleep and rest in.

one thing i didn't like was the very long wait time to check in. We arrived at around 12noon to make sure we finalize the check in papers already in time for our 2pm check in time. As expected though, our room wasn't ready yet so we decided to stroll in the nearby shops and mini malls. We returned promptly at 2 only to find out that our room was still not available. We only got to check in at 3pm :(

Another thing that i kind of didn't like is it's location... more of a residential place than a tourist area...however my boyfriend and I didn't mind it so much as an MTR station (Fortress Hill) is only about a 5min walk away :)

Hotels in Hong Kong tend to be quite flashy and City Garden is no different. Very flashy for the price. It was great value. It's a short walk from the MTR station, probably a little too far if I had to find something to complain about (but really, didn't bother me).
