Island Shangri-La Hong Kong
Ranked #13 of 723 Hotels in Hong Kong
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 1, 2013

My wife and I used to live in Hong Kong, and we still travel there quite frequently, and we have stayed at pretty much every 5-star hotel in HK and Kowloon. The Island Shangrila is our favorite. It's not the most luxurious (Four Seasons, Landmark Mandarin, Peninsula, Ritz Carlton probably has it beat on pure opulence), but it's the most "balanced" and comfortable hotel in HK.

Convenience: Connected to Pacific Place, but also easy walking distance to locations in Central. Pacific Place is not the biggest shopping mall, but the best place to hang out. IFC and others are too "busy."

Rooms: Not the biggest, but still ok. A nitpick here is no separate shower stall in standard room.

Restaurants: Good generally, but breakfast buffet could use some improvement. Another nitpick is the Summer Palace, the main Chinese restaurant - beautiful place but inferior cuisine in my mind to other hotels. But you can get around this by going to Golden Leaf next door at the Conrad.

Pool: Great pool. Four Seasons much bigger and better, but still the Shang pool is very good, and at least it's better than the Conrad. Nothing better than a nice dinner at Golden Leaf followed by a dip in the pool before going to bed.

All of this doesn't seem like a ringing endorsement, but we find Island Shang to be the best choice near Pacific Place, which is the best place to stay when staying on the HK side. Conrad good too.

Stayed: September 2013, traveled with family

The facility is top notched. And the staff, amazing. Didn't have one bad experience my whole trip. Everyone was very friendly, polite, and went beyond. I'm now loyal to this hotel and a huge advocate.

Room Tip: Request a high harbor view. Gorgeous at night!!

As soon as you get out of the cab you are warmly greeted by the door man and concierge as they whisk you through the grand lobby for check in.

Check in was quick and efficient and I was placed in a room on the 47th floor. The room is huge with all the amenities you need. I love the multi connector dock they have in the business desk so I can charge things in an Australian socket without a converter.

I used the gym every morning and not once did I have to wait for a machine and they had orange water and everything you would need provided.

The bell man helped me get where I was going. It is close to a train stop but also across from Hong Kong park which is lovely to walk though. It made my journey to work each morning peaceful. The hotel is also on top of a shopping mall. I would recommend having the buffet at least once as the deserts were amazing but there are a host of places to eat in the shopping mall if you wish to venture out and a it cheaper.

I would return to this hotel

This is just another 5-star hotel but the price is far more expensive than other countries. HKD 3,400 for a deluxe room without breakfast!

All the staff including bell boy, receptionist, concierge, etc. are very friendly & professional. I love their services. They gave me advises on directions and even printed the recommended eateries places or me!

The room is not as spacious as many other hotels. But it is cozy with a nice peak & sea view! We were also served with fruits basket & Evian water. However, some of the fruits are not fresh. :(

Bathroom have a clean bathtub and a tv! And the products given was Lo'ctaine! :) Enjoy!

Location wise, it is strategic! It is connected to a shopping mall, tram station, bus station, MRT station and other office building. All are within walking distance! Hence, you can easily commute to another part of HK easily.

We stayed in a Horizon Club Harbour View room and oh my goodness it was superb. Not only was the room excellent but the Horizon Club Lounge was very good too.

The room was huge, so lots of storage space, Nespresso machine and a very comfy bed, with a choice of pillows. The bathroom was large too, a separate shower cubicle which was good and L’Occitane toiletries. Oh yes, the view from the room was amazing!

The service was the best I have ever had in hotel, every single person you came into contact with was determined to please you and make sure you had a good stay. It started immediately upon arrival, as we walked into the lobby we were asked our name and immediately whisked up to the 56th floor to the Horizon Club Lounge for our check-in. Very impressive.

Horizon Club is on the top floor and is a great benefit. You get superb concierge service as well as having free beverages and snacks through the day, and free champagne and hors d'oeuvres between 6pm and 8pm. It also has a roof top garden which has some very beautiful orchids.

The location is very convenient. It is above Pacific Place (Admiralty MTR) and next to the Hong Kong Park, with only a 10 minute stroll to the Peak tram.

I’ve stayed in the Mandarin Oriental, JW Marriott and Renaissance Harbour View hotels in Hong Kong and the Island Shangri-La easily surpasses them all. I truly can not fault anything about this hotel, so don’t hesitate staying here, I can’t wait to go back.

Room Tip: opt for a Horizon Club level room

Yet another great stay at the Island Shangri La. Staying on Horizon Club floor is like going home. The staff and amenities are just super. We feel very spoilt every stay. We missed a room with a harbour view this time but we did not ask for one.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with harbour views
