“A top-notch hotel.. However service is where it pales slightly in comparison to Marriott”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

This hotel is everything you would expect out of a 5-star hotel: beautiful interiors, little touches during turn down service, clean and spacious rooms etc.

My only gripe would be that it lacks that personal touch of service as compared to nearby JW Marriott. Staying at the latter, made us feel infinitely warm and at home. Every service staff displayed true hospitality at Marriott; it was hard to beat (stayed at Marriott just 3 months ago). What Island Shangri-la lacked in the genuine hospitality department, the beauty and grandeur of the rooms tried to make up for it. Marriott on the other hand, looked slightly dated and aged in comparison.

Since I'm one of those travelers who value service, I would rate Island Shangri-la 4* overall and Marriott 4.5*. Both are good hotels though :)

The Island Shangri-La Hotel is one of the flag ships of the chain, and sets a high standard not only in HK but Asia generally.
Its big, but still manages to maintain an intimate vibe never overwhelmed by the large number of guests. The rooms aren't big but are immaculate and tastefully appointed. Great bed and awesome thread count sheets add up to a deep sleep. Internet is fast but pricey. Just coming from China, the property reminded me how far mainland hotels need to come to reach this sort of standard.
The only complaint I have is the crazy prices charged in the lobby bar. This seems to be a recurring theme across Asia and I'm unclear why $10 cups of coffee make much sense.
Located as it is on the Island, the hotel is easily accessible anywhere you need to go by taxi. Its pretty easy to walk when you're heading out, but the hill side location would be tough on your way back if you're in a suit and dealing with HK humidity. Given the abundance of cabs ( and how cheap they are) this shouldn't be a problem.
The hotel is expensive, but you get what you pay for.
I will return.
One quick tip:
It amazes me how many people take a cab to the airport from their hotel in HK. A much faster and convenient way is to take the Airport Express from Central ( just say "Airport Express" to the cab), where you can check in your bags, get your boarding pass, and be at the terminal in 26 minutes. Once there you just walk to security. Why risk bad traffic queue up at the airport? At 90 HK$ its a deal to take the train!

Stayed in this hotel as a base for the HK sevens rugby. My friend and me had the rolls Royce airport pick up which was really good and I liked the personal greeting at the hotel entrance. Staff throughout our trip were very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Location perfect right in the heart of central and you are on top of Admiralty MTR. Definitely would stay here again.

We stayed in the island Shangri-la for 5 days at the beginning of March in a harbour view room. We'd previously stayed in the sister hotel on Kowloon side which we'd liked very much and were interested to see how the Island compared - we weren't disappointed. We arrived in the hotel at 8.30am after a flight from the UK and were immediately shown to our rooms - despite the 2.00pm check-in time -where an pot of hot jasmine tea was waiting with a bowl of delicious fruit both of which were appreciated. The bed was supremely comfortable, the room spacious and the amenities well thought out and top quality. Breakfast was a delight with an excellent range to cater for boith eastern and western tastes. The service was what you would expect from a Shangri-la - effortlessly efficient and endlessly thoughtful. A class act!
The location is great and convenient for the MTR. The only thing is that the traditional style decor is beginning to look a little dated - too much dark wood for our taste but that in no way detracts from the overall standard and quality of service this hotel offers. If i could move in I would!

Room Tip: If you can - go for a harbour view room - you won't be disappointed.

As the chain's flagship property, this hotel delivers on all counts. Although the hardware is a little dated, the service is top notch and the attention to detail is amazing. Some of the things that caught my eye were a regular-sized scissor in the room, hair band in the bathroom, full set of plates and cutlery in room, swimsuit dryer in the changing room, and single-servings of alcoholic wipes on the running machines. Although I prefer Technogym, they have a very well stocked selection of Lifestyle equipment. There is also a window with sunlight on one of the walls of the gym. It is also one of the most spacious and well-appointed gyms I've seen. Their staff was incredibly friendly. I stay here whenever the Four Seasons is not available.

A five star TripAdvisor rating for a hotel which is surely more stars than that. The ultimate in service, quality, space, charm, attention to detail, luxury and convenience. I have stayed here on numerous occasions for business and find it an absolute haven in heavy Hong Kong. If you have some cash to splash and want to feel really special, go for it. And it's location, right above the Pacific Place shopping mall means that you can make the most of the spare time that you have to pickup items that you need and get some good nosh at the many restaurants there.
