“Sub-Mediocre, left after 1 night”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2009

This is your typical old musty hotel that wants to be 4 or 5 stars but is the US Equivilant of a $80/night Day's Inn plus a Plasma TV and Concierge/Nice Lobby.

Everything about it was mediocre, we left after one night went to the less expensive W Hotel which was infinitely more enjoyable. Service was rediculous at the W vs. the barely English speaking concierge and 2 different rooms we had that smelled like smoke at Mandarin Excelsior.

Oh and book online if you do go because they try to charge you more than the Website if you show up, we had to haggle over that too.

Can only agree with BByr and the detailed information he has given, we stayed over christmas, and meet up with family. Dickens Bar in the basement very reasonably priced and the happy hour makes it a very popular bar. Hotel is ideally placed and has great views of the harbour. All the staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly and the breakfast buffet was excellent
(We also went to the Venetian Macao and I think it is unfair to try and compare the two hotels.)

Acid test would you go back again?
Yes definately

This is one of the best hotels I've stayed in Hong Kong and Macau. Before I've even checked in to the hotel, I've already experienced their excellent service. The reason being I wished to watch a particular play in Hong Kong on Xmas day and the by the time I've confirmed my trip it was too late for the tickets to be mailed to my house as it takes 10-15 days for overseas patron. Hence I emailed Excelsior requesting the tickets to be sent to the conceirge and be collected upon my arrival. My request was very promptly attended to and followed up by sending me acknowledgement that the mail has been received. One may think that it is expected of the hotel to provide such personal service; nonetheless I'm still very impressed by their speed and sincerity to serve their guests.

Apart from excellent service, this hotel by Mandarin Oriental Group offers great location. Ladies, get ready to shop til you drop as SOGO and Patterson Street is just a 5 mins walk away. World Trade Centre (Shopping again!) is just beside the hotel with Starbucks facing the side entrance of the hotel. But I suggest to stroll down to Jaffe Road for a taste of milk tea in Hong Kong Cafes. There is a 7-11 store very close to the hotel in case you need something *ahem* urgent in the wee hours.. (to fill your hungry stomachs I mean). The nearest MTR exit is also of a very short walking distance. Airport express bus stop for bus A11 (costing only HKD40 per trip to/from airport) is also easily accessible.

The hotel is also the only franchise in Hong Kong that sells possibly the best portugese/macanese egg tartlet from Lord Stow's Bakery minus the queue common at Coloane, Macao.

Finally I'm coming to the rooms. I've booked a double room with side harbour view; but its not worth the extra price for the side harbour view. Perhaps one should just go for the full harbour view or just the city view. The room is very spacious and human intelligient (at least this is what I feel in comparison to the Venetian @Macao). The bed is not hard where hard beds is a common phenomenon in the SARs and China as other members have reviewed.

This is one hotel I'll recommend to people without budget constraint (actually not too expensive either, ~USD160) who prefers to tour Hong Kong Island more than Kowloon/New Terriories.

Stayed at the Excelsior for several days in November in a superior side harbour view room.

The public areas of this hotel are very well-maintained. My complaint is that there was a very unpleasant, moldy odor in the bathroom of my room, which seeped into the rest of the room, even with the bathroom door closed. Because the room and bathroom *looked* very clean and orderly, I assumed the smell had to do with some problem with the building's structure/plumbing (rather than a problem with that specific room), and I tried to ignore the smell for several days.

However, after staying in the room for several days, I finally realized that the foul smell was coming from the shower curtain; I requested that it be changed and the problem was instantly solved.

I really have a hard time reconciling how well kept the hotel was in general with how little attention the housekeeping staff seemed to pay to something as simple as asking "what is that smell?" and "what can I do to fix it?" without the hotel guest having to request that the shower curtain be changed. I am also disconcerted by the fact that the shower curtain had that smell when I first checked into the room, suggesting that the towel either had not been changed from an earlier guest, or had not been adequately cleaned between guests.

Apart from that not-inconsequential issue, I was generally very impressed by the Excelsior. The location is very convenient in Causeway Bay, less than a 5-minute stroll to the nearest metro subway entrance (and you can take the train, with a transfer, all the way to the airport for much less than the cost of a taxi or private bus ride).

The hotel's fitness room was one of the best-equipped of any hotel I have recently visited (unfortunately, the fitness room closed a little earlier than what would have been ideal).

The housekeeping staff paid attention to such little details as leaving a separate bookmark to be placed in each of the books that I had left out on the desk! Fresh fruit and bottled water were replenished each afternoon. Rather than telephoning to ask whether turndown service was required, the staff respected the "do not disturb sign" and silently slipped a note under the door indicating that they had stopped by instead.

All the staff with whom I interacted from check in through checkout were extremely efficient and gracious.

The website description of the room is misleading in that it advertises "these rooms are located on the 14th to the 27th and 33th floors, with partial views of the harbour and offer facilities including internet broadband and multi channel TV," yet the internet access required a separate fee (the multi channel TV did not), and this fee was not disclosed on the website. I have no objection to paying a separate fee for internet access, so long as the the hotel makes that fee very clear when the room is being booked.

As for partial harbour view rooms, there was so much fog most days during my stay, and the view of the harbour was so narrow, that the additional premium for a side view of the harbour was probably not worth the cost.

We stayed in the Excelsior for three nights as part of a tour we were doing of Bangkok, Hong Kong, Bali and Singapore. This is a very busy hotel but I suspect all hotels are in Hong Kong. The room was good if a little small and dated. It was clean and served its purpose. You are hardly in your room anyway. The breakfast was fantastic and the TOTT bar was fabulous, if a little pricey. Very good location.
I would recommend a visit to the revolving restaurant as a must. Fantastic views and good service. We went as part of an organised trip that included shopping and a cruise round the harbour. The buffet meal was so good we went back to the restaurant again!!
Stanley market was good and had the best items. We found Ladies market too busy and the items were not good quality.
A visit to the sampans was interesting seeing people live in ramshackle boats alongside the play yachts of the rich!

A well located hotel in Causeway Bay with stunning views from the 1st floor cafe. Rooms are well appointed with comfy beds. The bathroom was fully functional if a little dated.

Service in the hotel was top notch.

The Excelsior is another quality Hong Kong hotel. When I lived there in the early 1980s, the Excelsior was one of the top three hotels on HK island (along with the Mandarin and the now defunct Hilton), so on a recent weekend trip I was tempted to try it out. And it is still a very good establishment. It is in an excellent location - overlooking the harbour and the yacht club, next to Victoria Park (great for children and joggers), and right by all the restaurants, bars and shops of Causeway Bay. The service is excellent - really good attention to detail. We have a one year old, and came back from our first day out to find a stuffed toy in the room, and all the electrical plugs covered up - even though we hadn't asked anybody to do so. The buffet breakfast is very extensive - I can't think of anything else they could have included! It isn't all perfect - the hotel is showing its age (nearly 40) in some ways, with the bathrooms a bit dated. And avoid the front rooms on the lower floors, as the traffic below can be fairly heavy. But for us these were minor points. We have already decided that the next time we need a HK hotel, we will choose the Excelsior.
