“bit outdated but good service”
Reviewed June 8, 2014

wife and I stayed here May 2014 for business and holiday.
Pros-
1- the staff was very helpful in assisting wife's company retreat and the Concierge especially in helping us plan routes using public transport to go to less known neighbourhoods. We had a few mornings where staff would research for 10-15 minutes the best routes for us.
2- We were to stay here a week and the clothes hangers were not enough- but a call to housekeeping and we quickly had 10 more.
3- the location is good- near shops and good restaurants and very short walk to MTR and buses. Across the busy alley is a smallish modern shopping center (WTC).
4- the breakfast had a large spread, nothing special, with the usual Asian and Western, and was included in our room cost.
5- the dim sum, at least when served at the retreat, was very good.
6- the bed was quite comfortable. The room did not have unpleasant odors and was fairly soundproof, though it just may be we had quiet neighbours.
Cons-
1- the rooms are very small, especially the standard rooms, but this is common for HK. We had a harbour view but the view is mostly of construction just across the street. The toilet is small and not that modern- the mirror would completely fog up after a shower in the tub and would need to wipe clear the mirror before shaving.
2- the hotel is a bit outdated. This was most evident in the room where there was a total of only 2 electrical plugs at the work desk to charge phones, plug in laptop, etc. Water kettle and other such things were hardwired into furniture or walls, with no plugs at bed side. Being a bit outdated but clean in general is acceptable. But in this age of IT equipment having only 2 plugs in room is not.
3- the A/C at the retreat meeting rooms were not able to be adjusted to the desired room temperature. It was too cold and a few attempts was not successful though the staff made good effort. Conclusion is that the equipment is not the most modern.

Conclusion- we would stay here again, mainly for the excellent service, the cons are livable.

Room Tip: go for an upgrade to slightly larger rooms- it makes a big difference, if only for the increased cou...

Great location! Very near to shopping district and MRT is within walking distance. The room quite small but comfortable. Design and deco quite old, perhaps they need to refurbish a bit. Service are definitely good, they even gave surprise birthday cake! Would recommend to anyone visiting HK especially those on business trip.

The excelsior is in a fantastic location in causeway bay. Easy access to the MTR and lots of good food nearby. Only minor problem is the lack of connected shelter to the train station when it is raining. The rooms are really old but clean.

The hotel gets really busy too as it is the hotel for the flight crew of any airlines.

Picked this hotel because of its convenience. It’s at the heart of Causeway Bay, walking distance to shopping and dining venues. It’s very old outside and inside, room and room are small but adequate, especially for business travelers who spend most of time out of the hotel. Comfy bed and cleanness is acceptable. Front desk was friendly and efficient. Breakfast place was noisy but food was OK.

This is an older hotel with decor typical for its age. Rating it as a 3*, the rooms are somewhat dated but nevertheless provide a good nights sleep. The buffet breakfast available has an excellent selection and there is no pressure to eat quickly and leave. There is also a British style pub downstairs which in the early evening is a convenient spot to enjoy a pint with friends and even enjoy pub style eats. There are shops including a cafe in the lobby and the lobby does gets very busy at check in and check out times so be prepared for that. Far front he best hotel in Hong Kong, it is nevertheless, a decent one I would not hesitate to return to.

We have been staying here since 1989 and it is the best location for a hotel on Hong Kong Island, close to Causeway Bay, the MTR and quick access to Kowloon side by MTR or Star Ferry.
We last stayed here in January 2012 and we thought that our room had become a bit dated - but this year we were in room 2323 with a harbour view and all the carpets had been changed and the room was far nicer. The turn down service is excellent and the found my missing glasses for me - many thanks for that.
We used the Xpress coffee bar on the ground floor for breakfasts a few times - delicious green tea and bacon rolls and very very good coffee. We also used the Dickens Bar for meals and drinks. The staff there are superb especially Shanti Gurung who is so helpful and well organised. She is a credit to the hotel, as are the concierge team who will go to great lengths to help you. I needed details of an exhibition at the Museum of Art and they printed out information for me. Mr Henry Wong is a total delight to deal with and I thoroughly recommend his services - he is a real font of all knowledge !!!
I cannot recommend this hotel enough - great situation - splendid staff and good service throughout! We will be back

Room Tip: Rooms on the 23rd floor seem nicer than other floors - quiet and nicely appointed.

The hotel is fine, but over-priced for what it is, and desperately in need of re-decorating. The décor felt about 20 years old and looked it, though nothing was broken.

The corridors and rooms all smelt damp and musty. Each morning I opened the curtains to find the windows coated in condensation. I appreciate it is tropical climate, but decent glazing and air conditioning ought to be able to sort the problem. There is no point in having a room on the waterfront if you can't actually look out of the window to enjoy the view.

The room felt very quiet, and I did sleep well.

The hotel breakfast was very good, so no fault there!

The hotel bar has fantastic views out across the bay, and the drinks are reasonably priced. The staff in the bar were also friendly and helpful.

The location is a little out of the centre, so expect to either walk or take public transport
