“Still disappointing”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

My last few reviews of this place have been less than pleasant.

I have no choice but to stay here when on business so I made a point of spending as little time as possible in the hotel itself.

Iv little to report other than the rooms still are overdue a significant upgrade and the lobby really needs a rethink as its so crowded and busy.

On the plus side I encountered some very lovely front desk staff including the delightful Regina.

Room Tip: Try to get a double with a harbour view if you can.

It's first time for me to stay at THE EXCELSIOR in spite of trips to Hong Kong for > 5 times. Fortunately corp. rate was lower than price offered by hotels around Kowloon area.

Equipments in the room might be rather old, but I felt it value on the easy access to Central area with either bus, MTR & taxi.

Room Tip: Frequent stay at hotels under MO group. Then it could be possible that hotel arranges nice room

Recently stayed at The Excelsior for three nights whilst on business. Brought my spouse along as he had not yet visited HK. As hotels go on HK Island, this is a fairly good deal given the extremly inflated real-estate/hotel market, particuarly in Central. A few specifics:

The Location: Located across the road from the typhoon shelter (which is currently a massive construction site due to the unterground by-pass road being built under the reclaimed shoreline), the hotel is a short walk to the Causeway Bay MRT station, and a short three stops from Central Station where you can connect to the Airport Express train, various ferries (including to Macau) and other train lines. Causeway Bay is also an excellent shopping and dining mecca in Hong Kong. The location is also next to (and connected from the second level) the International Trade Centre, with plenty of good quality shopping and dining options under one roof.

The Airport Arrival: We had pre-booked a hotel shuttle bus from the airport and were given specific instructions by email prior to arrival to make our way to the A1 counter at the airport's arrival area. Exiting customs from the B area, we walked to the opposite end of the airport to locate the A1 counter only to be welcomed by a sign redirecting us to the B1 counter at the opposite end of the arrivals area, and just outside where we had just exited customs. Not the best way to arrive. Once we made our way back to the B area, we were appropriately greeted and escorted to the waiting area for the bus (again having to go back across the airport to the A area (a lot of walking whilst dragging luggage to and fro. The airport bus ride to the hotel was quick and comfortable.

The Check-In Experience: Upon arrival, we had booked a "superior-side harbour view room" and were told that we had been upgraded to a larger room. Good, I though, until we made our way up to the room, which though it seemed larger than the online pictures, had absolutely no view at all, other than a wall and city view. I quickly returned to the lobby to ask for another room and after some minimal discussion, was moved to 2104, a harbour view room.

The Room: Is this hotel dated? Yes. But the rooms are comfortable. The beds are a bit soft by Asian standards, but the comforters and pillows were nice. The built-in furniture was efficient, but definitely dated. The closet was adequate, as was other storage in the room. The bathroom is small and dated. The toilet seat needs replacing and the tiles on the bathroom ceiling seemed loose. The rooms definitely need a good retrofit, or at least some sort of pick-me up. All in all, though, the rooms were fine.

The Food: Breakfast was very nice. We had booked the B&B package and were pleased with the quality and variety of food offered at breakfast. We also opted for the international buffer dinner on our first evening, and were equally pleased with the quality and variety of the food. Do note that hotel food prices in HK are very high by international standards, but at least here at The Excelsior, you are getting what you pay for. You certainly don't feel cheated, even with the high price tag. We had all other meals outside the hotel, at equally good restaurants, all of which were cheaper, but as good quality.

All in all, a good stay. Would certainly consider staying here again.

Room Tip: Harbour View rooms are a must.

The location is a plus point, very accessible. It overlooks a very busy dual carriageway so a room on a higher floor (>15) is essential if you also want the harbour view. Our first room on floor 7 was noisy with traffic all night.

The rooms are slightly dated - particularly the bathroom. But for a city centre hotel, acceptable. My only bugbear (as with all Mandarin Oriental owned hotels) is the chargeable WiFi. Even at the lower room rates (which I assume we paid) this is unacceptable when even the smallest coffee shop can provide this service. Thus, we did not take breakfast at the hotel as we normally would but crossed the courtyard to a Starbucks with WiFi. The Starbucks is in the World Trade Centre shopping centre which has a good selection of shops. There was a steady stream of folk exiting the hotel going to Starbucks!

We were not able to eat in the 34th floor restaurant as they were closing at 9.30 pm so we had a simple meal in the first floor cafe - it was OK.

One point of note - the excellent concierge service. They were very helpful - sorting the check in for our flights, and advising on our travel around the island generally. We took our suitcases to the airport bag drop at HK Central early on the day of our flight departure at midnight. This worked well as when we came to leave for the airport later, the traffic was gridlocked so we were grateful for the train option.

We left our carry-ons with the concierge and when we returned later in the day to change, we were given access to the gym/spa for shower facilities. This was much appreciated and a reflection of the quality of the concierge service offered here.

I would return to the hotel if the WiFi charging is sorted out!

I was staying here on business. The hotel, the staff and the food were fantastic and the views of Hong Kong incredible! It is perfectly located for all the bars and restaurants.

I look forward to a return visit!

This hotel is in Causeway Bay and close to the underground, great shopping and Convention centre. We had a 34th floor room with a stunning view of Hong Kong Harbour.
The room was very comfortable and had all amenities including free wifi.
The bar and restaurant on the top floor has brilliant views of Hong Kong Harbour and city.
We found the staff very helpful.

This is not a hotel where the staff will know your name but they will provide a consistent high level of service. The hotel is in an excellent location for both shopping and business .
The only thing to watch out for is the long wait for taxis in the morning.
