Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

I guess maybe I am the Grinch of this group, but I have seen the MO (not the Landmark) deteriorate in service quality over the past several years. A couple of years ago, this hotel was the gold standard for service in Hong Kong, now I am sorry to say that it wouldn't even crack the top ten.

It is just the classic case of the hotel resting on its past glory and not really being consistent or not really caring since it has the Mandarin name behind it. Maybe I got the C-team during my stay, but everything was just mediocre. Not worth the money I spent here and just plain sad- as I think that the restaurant service is great. It is just the front desk service that sort of makes you feel that you are at a two- or three-star as opposed to a five-star.

In terms of rooms, etc., first rate- but that is what I am paying for, so can't say that I was overly impressed.

first time in this Mandarin Oriental. a classic 60s (?) building with just the right patina. not grand or flashy, just quietly excellent. the room layout is a little unusual with an open vanity area between enclosed toilet and wet room. nice view, even from the back of the hotel, of Foster's HSBC coat-hanger HQ. but the best thing was the smell.. something i can't put my finger on but deliciously calming. slept like a baby..

I arrived flustered after jumping on a flight for a last minute business trip to Hong Kong. I had just got an iPhone. I could not access Viber, SKYPE or call out as I had failed to request global roaming given it was a new contract. Gloria in reception was amazing. After she upgraded me she gave me the run down and linked everything up. She helped me get the business centre on the phone to Telstra and had them remove the international barring. She explained how it was best to buy a local SIM card and offered to get me one. She had all the prices and had me all sorted within the hour so I could phone home. The concierge was very helpful helping locate a hard to find kids toy that, last time I stayed at The Four Seasons they were unable to do. Although I have always stayed at The Four Seasons, The Mandarin Oriental was less of a business hotel and more hospitable, with a feeling of a smaller hotel that has the time to offer their guests amazing service. Really fantastic room attendant that cleaned the room the minute you left. I never had to ask the room to be done which has happened a couple of times at the Four Seasons. Overall, the pool at the Four Seasons is the make or break. If I was travelling up there in summer, I can't go past the pool on the rooftop of the four seasons and the view from the gym is awesome too. If the rates are the same or often less when you have an Amex and its winter, I would stay at the Mandarin as the service is better. Having said that, the two are the BEST hotels I have ever stayed in for service so you could not fault either. I had a harbour view suite which was beautifully decorated and lovely and quiet. The only downside is that if you are getting taxis in the other direction you need to go around the block and there is no free shuttle to Central like the Four Seasons offers its guests (although they don't advertise it much!) Another minor gripe- the bed was really hard!

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to a harbour view. Chances are you might get it if there is a room available

There are a lot of great hotels. Hotels that are so grand they take your breath away. George V in Paris, Excelsior Rome, Upper House Hong Kong and just about any other new hotel in China. But there are very few best hotels. The Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong is one of those.Yes, compared to newer hotels the rooms are small. Yes the view has become a bit limited. But with a couple of exceptions it is near perfect. The Mandarin defined what great service was and it still does. From meeting you coming off the plane, to the best sports masseuse in the world (personal opinion), to one of the great restaurants...not the ones on the top floor..the mandarin grill where the seats are comfortable, the numbers are limited, you can hear yourself talk, the waiters know what they are doing and the food is just as good as everything else. The gym is sensational. Two minus. How could a hotel this good continue the wifi rip off? And what happened to the fresh fruit at breakfast?

Was on a business trip to HK and my client put me at the Manderin in a great corner suite... Fantastic hotel...very oppulant and has an old world charm. Service is fantastic and staff are truly accomodating and go out of thier way to make your stay and visit truly memorable.
Saw a "completely" different side of HK than my last stay...very upscale area close to the club district so i got a chance to get out and enjoy the nightlife as well. Everything seemed nearby so i did alot of walking but was ot inconvenient at all. Will definately stay here again when i need to be on this side of the water... service is hard to beat....

Room Tip: Corner suite..That way you will have 2 balconies with 2 distinctly different views

Service, attention to detail and cleanliness can't be faulted. A top hotel in a great location. You truly get what you pay for here.

Highlights: fantastic shower in room, chilled pewter tankards for beers in the Captain's Bar, valet drop box.

Lowlights: none!

So conveniently positioned, this hotel is a joy to stay in. Their service is second to none with impeccable attention to detail. The staff are friendly, smile a lot and are genuinely happy to help - world class.

Room Tip: Corner suites have incredible views over the harbour.
