“Top rate hotel in an excellent location”
Reviewed June 18, 2010

This is an excellent hotel with first class service. The location is excellent, being almost on top of the subway Admiralty Station. (BTW, if you are taking the Airport Express train, stop at Kowloon and then take the MTR to Admiralty Station.)

I travelled with my family so they were well occupied. The restaurants in the hotel itself and the Pacific Place mall are very good. The Man Ho Chinese restaurant is award-winning but alas its prize also matches.

I had a corner room that I thought looked bigger on the floor plan than the regular room. HK hotel rooms are tiny so I was grateful for the room that could accommodate two double bed. My room was not noisy.

The bathroom was also sizeable--WC on the left, bathtub AND shower stall on the right; sink in the middle.

No real complaints except that the non-smoking floor had a faint odour of smoke.

I would definitely stay here again with the caveat that I will ask for a quiet room.

Stayed at the JW Marriot a couple of weeks back. What could i say except it's absolutely amazing and exceeded all expectations!

Beautifully appointed room with a spacious bathroom. Everything is carefully thought for in this hotel. The bathroom has a full set of quality amenities from shampoo, conditioner, bath salts to the leather jewelry box. The bed is huge and plush with the softest duvet cover to ensure a good night's sleep! The linens will be changed daily too if you like! Wide screen TV and Bose sound system - how could i complain !

In-room dining service is great too and delicious! The evening turn down service is a nice touch - it's great to go out shopping in the afternoon and come back later to find an impeccably made-up room.

The heated pool looked quite small so we didn't try to take a dip which we regret later as we moved to Harbour Plaza Metropolis after 1 week stay at Marriot and the pool at Harbour Plaza is freezing cold!! Now i understood why the Marriot pool is heated.

I would absolutely recommend anyone to stay at the Marriot. I loved it!

My parents are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary after a challenging year of health problems, and the hotel staff made our vacation special.

LOCATION
The JW Marriott might be a surprise choice for leisure travelers, but its location right on top of Pacific Place Mall, with access to the adjacent Admiralty subway station, is spot on. One can go anywhere by Metro-- Central and Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui are easily accessible, and cabs are easy to catch. It is a long walk or a quick cab ride to the HK Academy for the Performing Arts, and the Convention Center beyond it. Ocean Park buses leave from Admiralty Station too.

There are dining options at the hotel and in Pacific Place and the nearby Star Street. A Watsons drug store at Pacific Place is handy for things travelers need. The dining options are decidedly gourmet rather than discount, to go with the designer stores, but those with champagne tastes on a beer budget can take their pick at the Great Food Hall at the lower level of Pacific Place. This food supermarket has a great selection of food- fruit, ready to eat cuisine from around the world, cheese, chocolate, a gelateria, wonderful produce and seafood, even an olive oil bar and more things we could not take home. You can even score some foie gras if you feel like it. (Thanks to Marissa who helped us pick some items that we could take home with us.)

For Catholics, Star Street also has a Catholic Church housed in a modern tower block.

SERVICE
Right after I booked our stay online, the hotel's confirmation email was filled with helpful hints, weather reports, and offers on how to make our stay comfortable. We booked limousine service via the hotel, and so top notch service began from the moment we exited from airport customs.

THE SWEETEST THING: Steven Lo, Guest Relations Manager, sent up a tray of milk (on ice), chocolate, and cookies with a pretty greeting card after he found out that my parents were celebrating their anniversary.

The everyday service was excellent. Executive Level booking allowed us to be welcomed by Tiffani and checked in directly in our room. Coolio and other staff members helped us with our luggage and our other needs, seemingly arriving like a genie when we needed them after a day exploring the city.

The Executive Lounge concierge desk under Noel Arevalo's supervision helped us plan our excursions and took care of our travel arrangement questions. Agnes gave us the weather report and directed us to the wonders of Great Food Hall, among others. Helen took care of writing out our destinations in Chinese for our cab rides. Everyone was very helpful, all the way to express check-out with Caroline.

The Lounge wait staff- Vanessa, Lorna, Minda, Tess, and others- were very welcoming. Going for Executive Level was well worth it for the Wi Fi and the dining options. For senior citizens or tired travelers, or even busy business folks, the generous nibbles for breakfast and evening cocktails were a good way to start and end a day of exploration (or work) without the effort of going out. The coffee was excellent, and the spread was well-chosen each day.

My parents were definitely spoiled by the experience- the JW Marriott set a new bar for service.

ROOM
The rooms are 31 square meters, perhaps small but normal and comfortable by Hong Kong standards. But they do not feel tight at all because two sides are picture windows, with drapes that could be conveniently drawn at the press of a button next to the bed. In our case, we had a view of the mountains and some nearby towers (including the Conrad and the Island Shangri-La on the same complex), with birds swooping by.

For seniors with difficulty getting in and out of a tub, it was a nice touch that the shower stall was separate from the tub. The toiletries (Nirvae botanicals) were also good- we especially liked the orange and sandalwood lotion.

The desk was well-equipped for work, with stationery items like highlighters and sticky pads and staplers, in case one forgot to bring them along. Free in-room Internet access would have been nice, but the Executive Lounge was conveniently nearby anyway. (I don't know why a lot of high-end hotels do not offer free Internet, while, for example, the mom-and-pop places on Panglao Island in Bohol made the length of Alona Beach essentially one long Wi Fi zone.) BTW, the Executive Lounge also had computer stations for those who are not packing their own gear.

BEST: Service
LEAST: hard to think of one, but maybe, for Hong Kong, a better or wider selection of dim sum in the cocktail spread might be nice. (The hotel has a good Chinese restaurant downstairs.)

In keeping with the local culture, you're made to feel special as soon as you arrive here. The attention given to each and every individual made be considered by some as too 'hands on', but personally I enjoyed this (it's all too rare in Europe!)

The entire hotel is kept beautifully clean and there is real attention to detail on presentation (from the rooms to the restaurants) The food is also excellent and the choice varied.

The only problem I encountered was the level of noise. From people noisily returning to their rooms late at night, to sounds of showers being run above and below, there doesn't seem to be much of a 'cushion' between rooms and this made for some sleepless nights. The bed was also very hard and this did not help matters!

All in all though, a good place to stay for business or leisure, and I would probably look to return here on my next visit.

We generally prefer boutique hotels but our stay at the JW Marriott Hong Kong was all-around great. V. good location especially if you are going to use the MTR (subway), great rooms by Hong Kong standards, nice view though now there is a building site between the hotel and the harbour (not their fault and no noise nuisance), more business hotel than leisure but the few tourists are still made to feel comfortable. Altogether a much better than expected experience and excellent value for money.

The JW Marriott Hong Kong was probably one of the better hotels in the city not so long ago. Unfortunately, the property is showing it's age a bit - more in terms of design than wear and tear. The location is very convenient for just about anything you could want to do in Hong Kong. The public areas are nice and the rooms clean and well-kept. The service was 5-star. All of that said, the property is looking a little tired. The fixtures and furniture could be updated a bit. In the same area at Pacific Place, you can also find much newer hotels such as the Conrad, the Shangri-La and the Upper House. They are way ahead of the JW Marriott. Here are some specifics:

Room: Small but that's to be expected in Hong Kong. Bathroom vanity was too small and crowded for my make-up items. Closet was fairly big. Great view, neat electric curtains. Staff kept turning the AC setting up to a warmer temperature when they made up the room - so much so that it was uncomfortable every time I returned.

Restaurants: Only had breakfast at the JW Cafe. Very good buffet breakfast. For means and drinks, it's much nicer to go to the nearby entrance to the Upper House and enjoy the views from Cafe Gray.

Pool: Nice, outdoor, gets some sun but often crowded in the morning. Odd shape makes it hard for more than a couple of people to swim laps at the same time.

Service: Very good, very polite, always helpful - particularly given the large numbers of people going through each day.

I stayed 1 night in a standard room and I found it a bit noisy because of the road traffic, but there may be quieter sides in the hotel. Although HK is a noisy city I can't remember of any hotel there with double windows or double glazing in the bedrooms, which is unfortunate. The Marriot is a standard HK 5-star hotel, which is a very high standard, but it is not the kind of hotel where I will return again and again. The location is good, especially if you want to do some shopping, as you have direct access to the Pacific Place mall where you can find lots of great brands (Churchs, Lane Crawford, Brooks Brothers, Seibu, Hermés, Ferragamo, etc.). You are also close to the subway and at in a walking distance from Central district.
