“Trader's Hong Kong Good Value”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

Located near the University, it's about a mile past the last MTR stop, but accessible via tram or Hotel Shuttle from the Airport train.
The hotel has good amenities, including fast internet, and there are good services nearby for the self-reliant traveller -- laundry, restaurants, convenience stores. Found a tailor about 3 blocks away and had two suits made up. The savings paid for the trip.

I have been to other traders hotel, the 4 star brand of Shangri-la hotels.
In shenyang I loved it, in Beijing I like it a lot, especially for breakfast.
In Hong Kong, I was a bit disappointed, for the small simple rooms, yet the views are wonderful.
From the facilities point of view, it is more like a European 3 star hotel, the room is small, and the bathroom is squeezed in the entrance. Decoration is modern. Breakfast is good, try the pancakes with choice of 6 different marmalades and jams.
You must get a room with sea port view, windows are from floor to celing, and they have a seating space just along the window, so you can relax watching the sea, or down from the 20th floor, while checking mail on your tablet, or watching television. If you fancy a swim, or like the gym, just go to the 28th floor, you can do both with breathtaking views...

Prices are not cheap, but it is Hong Kong.
I happened to be there during the typhoon and the staff helped me to find alternative flights to get out. They are all very helpful and lovely.

If you use tram to get around Hong Kong island, location is good. If you need the metro, it is not convenient. Bus A10 goes to airport, stops nearby. If you love night life in Hollywood road, it is not far, yet not near.

Room Tip: High floor, with sea port view

Happy friendly staff are great, but a room without an armchair? Yes, it is the poor cousin of Shangri-La, but I didn't appreciate just how poor until I saw the room: no bathroom, just toilet and shower opening onto the main room (technically separated by a screen, but as that area also has the front door, not really an option for a couple). And no armchair. You can sit on the window sill, but it is diabolically uncomfortable. The view is not as pleasant as the website would have you believe -- grubby building tops are as much in evidence as the harbour.

The Club is so-so, as expected for the price: but, it appears the hotel sells more Club rooms than it has space in the Club to accommodate. You may well be turned away, which makes the marginal value-for-money even more marginal. Breakfast is listed until 10.30, but starts to disappear back into the kitchen well beofre then, which seems a little mean. I would not stay here again.

If you stay on Hong Kong Island, you can stay away from the central area and still room in luxury and at a reasonable price in Hong Kong West, where we stayed at the Traders Hotel: Very clean, good modern rooms, very comfortable beds, good service and at an affordable price. The front desk personnel & concierge spoke good English and were very professional and accommodating. Trader's location is west of central downtown, however the hotel provides free shuttle service to the MTR and ferry docks. The concierge were very helpful in getting our taxi for us; it is a 5 to 10 minute ride to central Hong Kong depending on traffic and where you want to go. Not isolating at all!
We had room service which arrived to us timely and inexpensive in H K dollars.
We stayed at Trader's at the end of May this year. Our room was very clean, I liked the fresh and very modern appearance it had, especially the bathroom & shower and it had great views of harbor. The morning sunrise from our room was gorgeous!!
I would highly recommend this hotel and will certainly stay here again if we visit HK again!!!!

With the price point, this is definitely a good stay with view of the harbor. It's comfortable and clean. The sad part is that the serve a lot of the guests from mainland, who often seem rude (apparently their culture and problem adjusting to a metropolitan hong kong). They are in a big crowd and will physically push & squish you to the corner of elevator with no absolutely shame. (I am from HK originally myself and realized that HK chinese don't behave the same. It is packed everywhere but people are careful not to make physical contact). While I was being "sardine-d", they also frantically push all the buttons while trying to figure out how the card works. How inconsiderate! The staff should do something to educate these guests and assist with the elevator traffic. In another case, one lady was banging my door hard (note: not using door bell) , and when realizing it is the wrong room, she offer NO apology (how rude!!) and went away. Wow.
Other than the guest problem (frustrating enough though), everything else is fine. It isn't fancy like other Shangri-las but it is good enough. I actually like their choice of toiletries (shampoo & lotion) much better. Their cafe is minimal, but the view itself worth me spending sometime there. Pool is small but clean - didn't smell any chlorine. The location is close to downtown, but has a weird and small entrance that can't really allow cars to stay a little longer. And, forget about parking, don't think they expect anyone to drive, which is fair in the case of HK. The operator service is okay, but one guy didn't return to me on a commuting question and I had to call later and find another girl to help.

Having visited Hong Kong before (and stayed in Kowloon at The Grand Stanford Intercontinental) I was looking forward to staying on the island at the Traders and experiencing a different part of Hong Kong. I still love the city, but will not be returning to the Traders.

Firstly I was disappointed at the lack of response from the hotel when trying to arrange transport from the airport, my family and I ended up arranging our own transport after landing.

Having arrived and going into our rooms I was surprised at the layout. You walk through the door into the 'bathroom' (which consisted of a small glass shower cubicle, next to another glass cube that contained the toilet, set next to a tiny wardrobe with two small drawers and just across the room from a small sink and basic white countertop), a sliding wooden slated door (no handle) separated this from the twin bedroom which held two single beds, a desk and chair, tv and a narrow window seat (the saving grace was the view, which looked out over the buildings and across to Kowloon). Not a room to be used by two people who aren't completely comfortable with each other as there is NO privacy with the glass doors and the holes in the wooden door.

We went up to the business lounge for evening drinks and found the majority of the staff to be friendly, but very slow service and not very attentive. The seats were marked and grubby and the carpets stained (we made the mistake of moving one of the tables to find a completely different coloured carpet underneath)

Breakfast in the lounge was a similar experience, staff were friendly but not very attentive and not a large selection of food available. We were offered the option of going down to Café Malacca (the hotel restaurant) and found it to be the better of the two, although once again a few of the staff seemed to lack basic customer service skills. There was a large selection of cereals, juice, fruit, cooked breakfast (Which included boiled potatoes and chicken nuggets!), pastries and a machine that makes pancakes to order.

The location of the hotel is VERY out of the way for the main attractions of the city. The hotel does offer a regular shuttle bus down to the ferry ports, but the taxis do not know where the hotel is (5 turned my brother away one evening), I would suggest you carry a hotel business card or something with the name and address on in Cantonese and this seems to help.

Overall there were two fantastic members of staff who made the stay bearable (Cherry in Café Malacca and Guichi in the lounge), but found the hotel to be shabby and tired looking, the staff to be unattentive and lacking and the location to be poor. I expected more from a 4* hotel, but was disappointed to find that the staff had been told that they shouldn't try too hard as they were only a 4*!!!!

Will return to Hong Kong as much as I am able, but will not return to the Traders if I can help it! Would much rather spend the extra and stay at The Intercontinental again.

This hotel is amazing in every sense. The only problem is that there is not subway station (MTR) near by and little bit far from Central, however price, service and facilities worth the stay. Anyway there are very good transportation services by bus to Central.

Room Tip: For couples, the best are the ones on 26th floor.
