“exellent value and location for central Hong Kong”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Stayed here for the Hong Kong Sevens weekend. Location of hotel is within 2 mins walk to Sheung Wan MTR station (take Hillier Street, exit A2) which is on the Island Line that connects you to Central, Wanchai, Causeway Bay.... The Airport Express Hong Kong Station is within 15 mins walk (if you're too early to catch the shuttle), and this hotel is the first stop for the free Airport Express Shuttle Bus (H1).

We like the location for its proximity to Soho shops (antiques, furniture, art galleries) and there are plenty of interesting restaurants to try. Gough Street is less than 5 mins walk from the hotel and is a good source for home furnishings. Tai Ping Shan area (Upper Station Road) and vicinity has cutesy galleries and boutiques. Walking to Central takes less than 10 minutes.

Dim Sum Square which is located just across the main entrance of the hotel serves excellent dim sum all day; so you can have dim sum for supper. Their custard buns and crispy bbq pork buns are excellent! There's a famous congee restaurant Sang Kee located on Burd St just behind the hotel, their beef noodle also seems to be popular.

also on Jervois st is Barista Jam; which serves great coffee (voted best latte in the local food mag); at HKD 39 for a large coffee, it's one of the better value coffee joints we found in Central HK.

If you run out of HKD, Cleverly Street (which intersects Jervois) has several moneychangers.

We made full use of the ice machine provided on the 3rd floor. The mini fridge in the room has been conveniently left empty for you to stock with your own drinks, there's a Wellcome supermarket on Queens Road, just across from the Hillier Street intersection.

We also enjoyed having breakfast on the outdoor terrace of the 2nd floor restaurant. Only quibble is that the breakfast spread stays exactly the same every day (for the 6 days of our stay).

The free wifi in the hotel worked perfectly. Rooms are reasonably sized (by Hong Kong standards) and the toilet/shower is very cleverly designed to maximise the use of space. Bed is very firm and there is a choice of firm or soft pillows provided.

All in all, we have a very good stay and would certainly use this as our base to explore Hong Kong if we were to visit again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on higher floors for better views.

This hotel gets good marks for cleanliness, location to the MTR Sheung Wan stop, and value for money. I stayed here for 4 nights last November 2012 on a business trip. I arrived late at night from the airport but only walked 5 minutes from the MTR stop to the hotel. The staff is polite but not overly helpful. The breakfast is very good with a variety of hot and cold dishes, both Asian and Western. And, there is free wi-fi. There are also restaurants all over the immediate neighborhood and a convenience store (7-11) across the street. The neighborhood is in the older traditional part of Hong Kong island and not in the touristy upscale shopping district. So, if you're looking for dried goods, near an MTR stop, which is only 1 stop from Central MTR, and walking distance to SOHO, Western Market, this is a good choice. As a caveat, all the rooms are small compared to Western/American hotels, but they are very clean, have modern furnishing and a business computer room with a Mac, PC, and vending machines, washing machines for your clothes.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor facing the ocean. I stayed on the 12th floor and the view was of taller buil...

I was in a Superior Queen room and was pleasantly surprised with the size of the room, and that i had a largish window. Checkin was efficient and easy.
Location pretty good for Soho areas, and not too far from train station.
Breakfast buffet was also pretty good.

Room Tip: Higher up will most likely get the better views

After a quick look at the map and looking at my itinerary, I picked this hotel based on location, access to public transport and price. I was able to easily walk to the Macau ferry terminal, subways, bus stops and all the trendy SoHo restaurants. The hotel rooms were small versions of the "typical" HI Express rooms with free wifi and a good buffet breakfast included and also a laundry room which was a nice bonus. The area directly around the hotel isn't all that attractive but I walked around there late at night with no issues. The hotel itself is pretty new and for those interested in the environment, it's also LEED certified. The receptionists all spoke great English.

This new Holiday Inn express is in a great location, walking distance to ferries etc. Some reviews mentioned that the rooms may be small, for us it was not a problem (it is a city centre location after all). The bedrooms are very good. The staff most friendly and helpful.
The breakfast were acceptable.
Overall great value for money

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express Soho right now. We dont like the area at all but the hotel is brand new (only about 2 months old), modern, has excellent buffet breakfast (different from the HI Express in the US), free wifi, free bottled water, laundry facilities. The room is small, but average for Asia standars. We are only 3 blocks from the Sheun Wan metro station and 3 blocks from the Mon Ma temple where the tourist bus stops. What puzzles us is that the area around the hotel looks quite ugly, but you can find expensive and fine art galleries and antique stores right next to ugly street food places, very confusing. There are also countless restaurants and street food places around the hotel, there is a creperie right outside the front door which looks quite nice. If it were not for the area surrounding the hotel, I would say this could be one of the best hotel values in Hong Kong.

Holiday Inn Express Soho in the heart of Hong Kong is inexpensive (relative terms) and provides all that you need for a night's good sleep. Do not expect a W or JW Marriott, expect a simple and clean room, most importantly a comfortable bed.

Took an Executive Suite, which is essentially a double sized standard room. For the room space, it looks sparse but takes away much of the cramped feeling you might feel from a standard room. Above that, didn't think the suite space was needed if all you need is a lie down at night while you are out the entire day in the city. On top of that, all 4 suites are low floor. Next time I will take a high floor standard room.

Hotel is new (~6 months), so generally the lobby and cafe looks clean and tidy. Breakfast and free wifi is offered, both are much appreciated which gives the property even more value. Nothing much else is there except a pay laundry floor which is especially useful for extended stays.

The best part of the HIE Soho is the proximity to Sheung Wan MTR (3-4mins walk) and within walking distance to Central if you choose to. So it's a very good base for your tour. The property is popular so do expect bit of crowds.

A recommended "budget" property

Room Tip: High floor will be the way to go
