Hong Kong doesn't seem to be a great place for budget travellers.
At first, I was a bit turned off by Safari Guesthouse. It is located in the so-called Chongking Mansions (don't be mislead by the word "Mansions" in the name... to say that this building is dodgy would be a massive understatement), and the Indonesian receptionist (cum owner?) decided to bring me to another guesthouse, on a completely different floor, in a completely different block.
The room was tiny and not well-ventilated. The hot water in the shower also varied between boiling hot and frigid, with nothing in between.
But.... the room was immaculately clean, and the bed was actually very comfortable. Since there were no windows, actually I could've slept in for a very long time.
If you are a solo traveller on a budget, I can recommend this place. Just keep in mind the pros/cons of staying in Chongking Mansions (I think many of the guesthouses - and there are many - in this building are about the same standard. Chongking Mansions is close to the action in Kowloon, and accessible to the ferry terminal which transfers to Macao and Hong Kong Island. There is also a variety of Indian snacks on offer, which can be refreshing if you, like myself, don't care much for Chinese food (but then, who goes to Hong Kong for Indian food??). But you will be bombarded with Indian men trying to swindle you and sell you stuff you don't need. Actually this occurs all around Nathan Road, but is most heavily concentrated in the immediate vicinity of Chongking Mansions. You have been warned.
