“Thanks for wasting our evening”
Reviewed January 24, 2014 via mobile

My girlfriend and I had been really looking forward to some Vietnamese and having been to Nha Trang frequently we decided to try somewhere new. We arrived at around 2030 on a Friday night and were informed that the wait would be around 20 mins.

An hour and 40 mins later we decided to cut our losses now bored and so hungry we weren't willing to wait any longer. Even at that point we were told that it might be another 10 minute wait!

We've visited Nha Trang many times on a Friday night where they also have a no reservation policy but we've never waited more than 30 minutes. It seems at ChomChom they are unable to make the policy work. At no point did the manager come and apologise to us. He seemed more interested in wiping down tables than speaking to us or any of the other couples who were by now quite fed up. At the end of it all they tried to charge us for 'complimentary' prawn crackers and service! We refused to pay for either.

Summary - Unless you're prepared to go for dinner ridiculously early or wait most of the evening for food give this place a miss and head to Nha Trang on Wellington St for great food and service.

“Very disappointing and way overrated”
Reviewed January 11, 2014 via mobile

Simply put, this place is just a standard Vietnamese restaurant with limited seating and decent decor. Menu was very small with limited selections; all the dishes are regular Vietnamese food that you can get anywhere else. Nothing special about this place besides an especially long wait for tables. There are places that are worth 1.5 hours of waiting time sure, but not this place. Points can only be given for friendly staffs.

Dear CAMA11412,

We appreciate your feedback and regret that you did not have a more memorable dining experience with us. At Chôm Chôm, we pay homage to the Vietnamese bia hoi tradition of drinking fresh beer and eating street foods on busy street corners, and we hope that you will give us another chance to show you what we do best.

Please email Mia Rappoport in our communications department if you would like to come back in. She can be reached at mia@blacksheeprestaurants.com.hk.

Many thanks,
The Chôm Chôm team

“Brilliant Vietnamese food & good service”
Reviewed January 11, 2014 via mobile

This place is a real treat that deserves to do well. The food was top notch Vietnamese in a modern and quite trendy/stylish venue. We had seen it recommended in Time Out, but stumbled upon it unexpectedly as we explored the area.

We stuck to the tapas-style small dishes so that we could sample a wide variety of the delicious-sounding food and it was a wise choice. The food was stunning, as good as I have had in or out of Vietnam.

Interesting dishes included a sublime salmon tartare, beef pho rolls, and a beautiful fresh tasting beef and mango salad.

The staff were friendly and helpful too, and it was obvious that the other customers were enjoying the food as much as we were.

It is obviously a popular place and service & turnover was quick, so maybe not a place for lingering all evening, but definitely worth making the effort to find.
