Led here by my wife's unerring nose, we have just had a delightful, delicious meal with perfect service in this authentic Chinese restaurant. A wonderful start to our stay in Hong Kong. We highly recommend it.

We stumbled on this little gem of a restaurant by accident. We had the best meal of our trip. Ambience was lovely and the service efficient and friendly. We particularly loved the steamed vegetable dumplings and pickled cucumbers. Sorry not to have had the chance to go back...hopefully next time.

I have been several times and have loved all of my experiences. The food is superb, the price even better. And the service spot on.

Def going back. Often.

While Shanghai is in the restaurant's name, the food misses the style and was uneven in quality. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice. Service was efficient and responsive. Unfortunately Shanghai Lane poorly implemented most dishes we ordered.

Our first dish was the spicy brined cucumbers. It wasn't bad but was a bit bland. It was followed by dan dan noodles. The noodles were served in a red broth that reminded me of liquidy ketchup. It was mildly spicy and not peppery at all. I had two bites and put it aside. Our third course was dry tofu (Dou Gan) stir fried with preserved vegetable and pork. This was tasty but had a bit of sauce in it. Uncharacteristic of the Shanghai manner of preparing this dish and more akin to a Cantonese style. The fourth dish was their well known dumplings. They were quite good, and had pork and a pleasantly bitter mustard green in the stuffing. It was served in a soup broth that lacked umami flavor and did not add to the dish. Finally they served xiao long bao. This was their worst dish. The skin was thick and brittle. There were holes in the bottoms of most of the dumplings which let any soup out. Even the ones without holes had no broth in them, an indicator that the dumplings were overcooked.

I cannot recommend this restaurant for Shanghai style food, but it may be appropriate as a neighborhood restaurant for its dumplings and nice atmosphere.

We have been to all three of their establishments (Central, Tin Hau and Happy Valley) and everyone is great. I love the one at Gough Street near Central location as there is a member of staff called Ricky who is always friendly, efficient (think he's the manager) and attentive. We only visit Hong Kong once a year, but every year we always come and visit them.
Our favourites are Hot and Sour Soup, Drunken Chicken and also the freshly made Dumplings. They are also really good at recommending new dishes for you to try.
We are going back there in April and will defintely be visiting again.
I have even told my friends in the UK to visit Shanghai Lane in Hong Kong when they are travelling there and their comments have always been great.
