After having a very good experience in the original tim ho wan in kwon wa street, i've headed for it's second branch in sham shui po. And i was dissapointed. Definitely, it was a good chinese restaurant, but food quality is a mile behind the original and not worth a michelin star. It is 5-6 bigger than original, so you dont have to wait here.
If you are nearby, it is really a bargain and good food. But it is not worth travelling to sham shui po for this dissapoinying michelin star experence.

Tim Ho Wan Dim-Sum (添好運)
Hong Kong Central Station, MTR/IFC Mall

- Go enjoy delicious treats at the famous "Tim Ho Wan Dimsum" at this NEW and PLUSH location (Its 3rd branch).

"Tim Ho Wan Dim Sum" is well loved by HK people! It even has a coveted Michelin Star to grace its name! Actually, it had been well known for decades in HK and other countries in the Far East, long before American Chef Anthony Bourdain introduced it to rest of the world in his recent "48-Hr Stopover" TV show.

Our world traveller daughter told us about this place. So, in HK last year, my wife and I went to its ORIGINAL dim sum shop in Monkok district for a taste.  Although we had expected long lines, we were not prepared to see its location (in a seemingly poor looking district), nor its small size, for a Michelin Starred Restaurant! But as soon as we saw and tasted their delicate dishes, we were TOTALLY blown away! They were not only heavenly in taste and of great variety, but also CHEAP in price!  Certainly wished we had a larger stomach for more!

So, it's no miracle that there is always a long wait to get seated, and that they have earned a Michelin Star! The diners are almost all Chinese, but we did see a table of 3 westerners at the establishment in Monkok that time.

In HK again this January, my wife and I are delighted to see that "Tim Ho Wan" has opened a brand new place in the PLUSH IFC (International Finance Center) Mall, right inside the beautiful MTR Central Station complex. I am happy to report that its menu is virtually the same, and everything we have tried are just as tasty as those in the original location. Incredibly, even the prices at this plush location stay the same as the original place!

This new location is also very small.  Long waits and table sharing are still the norm, especially around lunch time.
- Yes, they have menu in English. It's no surprise, and certainly very nice to see that now there are greater number of appreciative westerners among the waiting crowd in this nice location. Perhaps, this could be attributed to Anthony Bourdain's TV Show and/or to Tim Ho Wan's new and  attractive locale.  Definitely, its dimsums are "a must try" in HK, and worth going back for more!

ADDITIONAL INFO:
- Actually, IFC Mall is an attraction in itself for locals and tourists alike! Besides Tim Ho Wan, there are numerous other restaurants, cafés, cinemas, and upscale shops, not to mention the brand new gorgeous 2-level Apple Store in it!

- By the way, "Tim Ho Wan", 添好運, means "Adding Good Luck" literally. So, don't be surprised that eating there might just bring you more good luck as well!

- If you like Tim Ho Wan, which I am sure you would, do look up and try out the Michelin Starred "Ding Tai Fung" in HK, too, which is  famous for its delicate dumplings!

Went to the Tim Ho Wan branch in IFC. Its quite a small branch than i expected - its fast food style. Got there around 10 and there were already a long line. You grab a ticket and wait. They won't let you in until everyone in your group has arrived but were accommodating once everyone was there. The order came very quickly.

Food was nice. Better than the dim sum in australia of course but I've had better elsewhere. The cha siu pastry bun was really nice but it was not until some relatives took us to another yum cha place that we found this was only average because the other yum cha place was so much yummier. I can't remember the name of it.

Speaking to my HK relatives, they told me they have never tried tim ho wan although they work in the office buildings upstairs. It was too much of a long line and being HK locals, they knew where to eat and where all the good food was. I asked about the Michellen star and what they said you can't get a westerner to judge asian food because their palette is different to asians. After they took me to the other yum cha place (on the same day), i understood what they meant. It was so much better.

Tim ho wan was nice but i wouldn't line up more than 30 mins for it. Not sure whether it was just this branch that didn't meet my expectations... maybe the mong kok one is better - i dunno, didn't try. I think the price is slightly higher than the mong kok branch because of the location in the flashy IFC building but still cheap compared to our prices in Australia.
