“Expensive for the size/ammenities”
Reviewed November 24, 2013

Location = good, but there are slightly better (slightly = 2-3 blocks closer to Central)
Cleanliness = perfect
Breakfast = meh
Gym = tiny (but empty, which I like!)
Room = itsy bitsy
Other: glass bathroom doors (with optional shades), I kind of hate that; nice toiletries

My wife and I stayed at the Mercer from 14th till 17th November. Our choice was made based on the location and more favourable reviews than poor ones. Yes, I do agree access to the hotel takes one through smaller streets in the Sheung Wan area and that the lobby is not much to describe. However, the vast majority of the hotel staff are courteous and helpful. In the non suite room floors, there are only 3 rooms per floor hence it is very quiet in the rooms. Yes, the toilet is a bit small but much better than many in Europe. We have to accept that prices of Hotels in Hong Kong is higher than many parts of Asia. Mercer has its good points - the rooms are very clean, the side boards are wide enough to place our 2 suitcases, wide enough to move about without bumping into each other, boiling kettle , iron and a small folding ironing board are provided. The breakfast area is small but sufficient to handle guests who come in at different times of the morning. There is only one japanese sushi restaurant on the ground floor and I really do not know how well patronised it is. One cannot argue with the location especially if you are going to eat or dine at the Wellington Street restaurants serving famous roast goose, wanton noodles, dim sum are all within walking distance. There are two well rated fine dining cantonese restaurants- Chairman ( Kau U Fong st ) and Tim's Kitchen ( Bonham Strand ) within easy walking distances from the Mercer. You just have to get out of the hotel and a short walk gets you to the MTR station which can have you travelling to Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay easily. Even the Macau Ferry Terminal is about 5 minutes away by foot. An elevated covered walkway also takes you to the IFC within 10 minutes. We had a pleasant stay at the Mercer and for the many dining places we visited nearby, it was not a wrong decision even though the facade, street it is on is not as pretty as other hotel locations.

Room Tip: If one is out most of the day, the deluxe room is sufficient if one is out most of the day. Upgrades...

My two-night stay here was a disappointment and way overpriced for what it offered (it could have been that the period I stayed was an unusually expensive one due to the season or something, but I paid over $400 for a "suite" that was a suite only in name). It’s in an older white-brick building and most of the rooms are “suites”—but that’s an abuse of the term. My room on the top floor was no larger than the one at the Indigo Hong Kong, where I also stayed during this trip, but was divided by a wall with a large glass window with a shade. The bathroom/toilet was behind a glass door (not even frosted!) with a pull down shade that gets in the way when you open the door. Absolutely ridiculous even if you’re staying by yourself. I'm surprised that more reviewers haven't mentioned this---perhaps it was a quirk just in my room (3101). I had trouble getting the finicky wifi to work (turns out it doesn’t recognize Firefox, but I had to go down to the front desk to find that out). Typical poor bedside reading lights. The reception was hardly what I’d call friendly and professional. It wasn't rude, just much less friendly than in other HKG hotels I've visited. True, there’s a free mini bar with some Cokes and a couple of beers and a “kitchen” with a sink and microwave, but it’s barely useful. Small gym. Breakfast is free but after trying it the first morning I went to Starbucks the second. All I can say is that the location is very good and the bed comfortable. Otherwise, a bad value all around.

Stayed here as a base for a 4 day business trip. Good sized rooms with excellent free wifi and enough space to work in comfort. It is an 8-10 minute walk or 20HK$ cab ride to most of my client meetings in Central and at half the price of other hotels. I would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a stylish, functional and convenient base to explore Hong Kong. Shueng Wan has changed a lot in the 12 months since my last visit and has definitely become a bit more swanky (there are several new cheese and wine boutiques) without losing the authenticity that made such an impression on my last trip.

Room Tip: pay the small extra charge for a suite if staying for a few days

small, but very well located hotel (2 min to mtr, 10 min walk to Lan Kwai Fong bar district)
service excellent, very helpful an careing
rooms nice and clean
neighbourhood not too spectacular, but for business stay satisfying
gym and (tiny) swimming pool not worth to be mentioned, maybe better use for these facilities

Room Tip: Choose upper floors

Check in was smooth. Has to be the smallest hotel lobby I've ever seen. So I was skeptical until I reached the room. WOW! Incredible use of space and very comfortable and clean. Also good amount of lighting throughout. I had a one bedroom corner suite and it was fantastic. Wish I could have stayed longer than the one night. I will definately return for another stay soon.

Can't beat the location and the value for money. Front desk is perhaps a bit too cool for its own good. A bit more personable and interaction would have been nice, but perfectly efficient and courteous. Restaurant staff were delightful. We enjoyed our stay.
