To most people, Hong Kong is a modern city, full of skycrapers and highways. But I learned from news that 80% of Hong Kong is covered by nature parks, islands, bays, coastlines, etc. Few people talk about the latter part. Maclehose Trail is the perfect guide to help you explore the wonder of nature in Hong Kong. It goes from east to west of New Territories, where you will see the countryside, old houses, fishmens, the most beautiful bay like Southeast Asia, pass the center of the city, see the highrises in Hong Kong Island and also reach the highest peak of Hong Kong (957m).

If you hike on Maclehose Trail in summer, do bring enough water. The summer in Hong Kong is smothering. Call 999 if you do not feel well. The government will send a helicopter to save you.

We got up Christmas morning, headed to Mong Kok to find the shuttle to Sai Kung Town (after considering many alternatives, this turned out to be by far the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to get there), and then switched to a bus that took us to Sai Wan Pavilion to start our hike on the 2nd section of the MacLehose trail. The section we did passes through Sai Wan village/beach and finishes in Ham Tim Wan (from which we took a bus back to Sai Kung Town). It was a fairly light hike (some uphill stretches get your heart pumping), met some nice people along the way, and the only real disappointment was that 90% of the trail was paved!! A nice little adventure on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

The Maclehose Trail covers the east to the west coast of the Mainland of Hong Kong, and over 10 stages it covers 100 kms. Between stages 4-5 you get to experience the southern side of Kowloon - fantastic views. This trail is also the basis of the Oxfam Trailwalker held annually in November.
Section 1: easy, Section 2-3 - a challegne (however great views), Section
Preparation and planning is crucial as some Sections have no transport access eg. the join between Sections 4 and 5.
Suggestion: camera for those great pics, hat, sunglasses, some replenishment.energy food and plenty of water .. and I mean plenty of water..
Sections 1 - 4 use Sai Kung as the centre point to access the areas.
Section 5-6 use Prince Edward MTR - Bus 81.
