Owner description: Stanley is very different to other parts of Hong Kong, or completely different from what you think about Hong Kong. Stanley, located at the southern of Hong Kong island, is much more relaxed with beaches, hills and coves. You will find the western atmosphere in this small Chinese town.

“A pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hong Kong”

We caught local buses to and from Stanley and had a really lovely day's outing as a result.
Upon arrival we visited the markets and had fun doing some shopping there. We also wandered along the waterfront and had a leisurely lunch at one of the cafes, checked out Blake Pier and its surroundings and ensured we had our daily exercise workout by exploring the lovely park which spans the hillside just near the pier.
This was one of our most enjoyable and relaxing days in Hong Kong.

“A million miles away from HK.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2013

Stanley is a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the city. So easy to get to by local bus catching number 6, 6X or 260 from Central bus station. My advice to travel around HK on the MTR or the local buses is to get the Octopus Card, quick, convenient and very good value (local buses do not give back change). The journey is an interesting one either going through Aberdeen Tunnel or over the hill. Either way the scenery is spectacular passing the Happy Valley Racing track and Repulse Bay. Stanley itself is a typical sea side town with a Main Street running downhill towards the seafront. Visited mainly for Stanley Market which consists of a lot of shops selling paintings, jewellery, cashmere scarves etc at much cheaper prices than you would get in the city and very good quality. Plenty of restaurants of all types along the seafront from local food to traditional fish and chips or Italian. Some interesting restored buildings, prison and cemetery to visit if you would like to walk further. Avoid Stanley on the weekends as it is full of expats who escape the city to get to the seaside and spend the afternoon in the bars and spilling over onto the sidewalk. Is it typical Chinese - no but go with an open mind and just enjoy the change of pace, the bus journey and sea air.

“Not for me”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

When I read all the reviews on here i thought wow can't wait to see this place. What a disappointment. Nothing to see here. If you want to walk through tacky market then this is your place. If you want to sit and look at the sea this is your place. But not authentic Hong Kong. Pizza express,McDonald's and Starbucks says it all.

“Calm seaside lifestyle”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

The bus trip up and down the mountain is a sight in itself, especially when two buses pass each other on the narrow road. Check out the prime real estates belonging to businessman and celebrities.

Stanley has a calm relaxed feel and there are many western bars and restaurants.

Stanley Plaza is a small mall of boutique shops selling unique pieces. The major chains were McDonalds and Starbucks.

Stanley market is worth a visit for souvenir ideas.

“Hong Kong's own Amalfi Coast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

This is such a change of pace from the other side of the island. Where HK city is faced paced and crowded, Stanley is relaxed and relatively laid back. Some come here for the shopping. I came over for a relaxed lunch and a stroll along the quayside.

If you have the time, you can get to Stanley by taking the MTR Island Line to it's end at Chai Wan and catch the 16M minibus. The bus fare is $10HK which can be paid in cash or with the Oyster Card.
