Owner description: Stanley is very different to other parts of Hong Kong, or completely different from what you think about Hong Kong. Stanley, located at the southern of Hong Kong island, is much more relaxed with beaches, hills and coves. You will find the western atmosphere in this small Chinese town.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access, Stairs / elevator

Shopping is quite fun there. And the drinks in the bar is quite nice. Facing the sea with sea breeze. PERFECT.

The markets are set up in a few side streets and are packed with all kinds of things. There were the usual trinkets and cheap clothing but there was also beautiful art work, silk cothing, scarves, jewellery etc. We had lunch in one of the little restaurants/boutique hotels on the beach and there were five or so very small clothing shops close to the beach where I bought some clothes at a good price. The beach is quite lovely with upturned boats on a sandy beach and a few boats moored near an building that juts out into the sea. Very nice afternoon spent there.

There is a great beach there and a market very close to the beach. Well worth the visit. I also believe along the drive to stanley is Jackie Chans house..not sure how true that is but our guide told us. Very good area for shopping.

A 261 bus to Stanley is well worth it. The market is great to stock up on any clothes you may need and there are some fantastic little cafes and restaurants there to pass the time.

There's even a British pub!

Visited Stanley on a Wednesday evening as my friend in Hong Kong was training for the Dragon Boat race. We got a taxi from Central, which takes about 45 minutes (via the Aberdeen tunnel) and cost about HK$205 (was cheaper on the way back as there was less traffic).

Stanley reminded me of a British seaside resort - there's a market selling the generic tourist gifts, a promenade to stroll along, a pier, a (relatively new) nature path which takes you around to a beach (which was deserted at 6.30pm on a Wednesday) and several shops and pubs and bars on the sea front. It's definitely worth a visit to see more of what Hong Kong was like years ago but also to get away from the city for a bit!
