The annual Chinese New Year flower markets have officially kicked off CNY season in Hong Kong for 2014. One of the best flower markets each year can be found at the Mongkok Flower Market. This is actually a permanent flower market that becomes a maddeningly busy Chinese New Year market during the annual holiday season. All of the Hong Kong flower markets will be held for the next 5 days for those interested in seeing the spectacle prior to Chinese New Year day (31 Jan 2014).

Similar to past years, we found the crowds to be very heavy at the Mongkok flower market at the start of the CNY flower market. It can be difficult to walk through and see the permanent flower shops but there are some nice seasonal flowers and plants that available there this time of year, if you are willing to deal with the crowds.

You can also see many flower stalls selling the expected chrysanthemums, daffodils, kumquat trees, orchids, peach blossoms and other flower and plants. There are also a few shops selling CNY tinkers and decorations. You can find plenty of these at nearby Fa Yuen Street as well.

As with previous years, the orchids sort of steal the show in our opinion at the Mongkok flower market during the annual Chinese New Year event. Some shops are dedicated to selling orchids and the quality of what you can see right now is very good.

I went to the flower market on a weekday in the evening, during the preparations for chinese new year. The place is just awesome. I have seen flower markets in some cities but I must say this is the biggest one I have ever seen, stretching over a kilometer in length. There are a number of shops selling different kinds of flowers (orchids, lillies) and so on so forth. Just walk though the street and there is an aroma in the air that is so refreshing. I personally found the flowers to be not so expensive and you could buy a few if needed.

Combine a visit here with the bird market, the goldfish market and the long way down Nathan Rd, don't come here especially for this as you will be disappointed. The flowers are pretty but repetitive. Its belter when combined with other small attractions in the area and gives you a better view of HK life.

We visited in December, just a few days before Christmas. There weren't many flowers. And most of the stores carried the same plants. Most of the store owners do not allow to take photos.
So if you decide to go 15 minutes will be enough.

We walked the flower road, the bird park, and goldfish street in one go. It was barely worth doing. The flower shops were briefly interesting but very repetitive, many selling identical displays. Sure, they have some beautiful flowers but we have seen them before. The orchids are impressive. It has a wholesale feel to it, not really geared towards tourists. If your time is short skip this.
