“Not quite an icon”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2012

We are Hong Kong residents, and we stayed for a special birthday weekend in a club 65 room.

Pros: The Above and Beyond lounge feels special- great service, atmosphere food and views. But the supplement you pay for this is quite steep - make sure you allow enough time during your stay to get the full value! The Chinese restaurant is also very good - but again quite expensive. The host at the Above and Beyond restaurant was excellent - helping me to make food choices that would accommodate my gluten free diet. This was a real bonus! The beds are extremely comfortable and the rooms well designed. Wireless network is included in the room and is reliable and available around the hotel. .

Cons: The service attitude is a bit hit and miss - some people were great, others seemed to have a bit of a negative 'attitude'. Certainly the service attitude is no way matching the standards in most other decent hotels in the city. We did not have a 'club' check in - despite booking a club room. At reception the welcome was very cool. I was allocated a standard room, and I had to ask to get the room I had booked (a club harbour 65) No-one showed us to our room, or even told us where to find the lifts to get to our room (hidden around a corner). There was no evident reason for this as reception was not especially busy. Once in the room, I struggled to find the kettle (hidden in the fridge cupboard!) and was made to feel an idiot when I called down to ask. No newspaper was offered and it took several calls to get one sent up. The TV in the bathroom didn't work (we didn't complain on this as it wasn't critical), and on our second morning we could not get hot water in the bathroom. I called down to let the guest relations know, and again was made to feel a bit of an idiot ("have you turned it to hot" - "leave it to run for ten minutes" - of course we had done both!). No resolution was found and I had to go work on Monday morning having had a cold shower and without having washed my hair. Not good! The pool is nice, but service there is also so-so. Not enough loungers. Also we arrived at 4.45 on Saturday, only to be told the pool was closing for a function. We had chosen the hotel specifically for the outdoor pool to enjoy a bit of down time with the view -so were very disappointed about this.

Other small points: The lifts are really slow, which would be a pain if you were in hurry for meetings. The hotel advertises a free mini-bar, but actually there is not much in it - just a few soft drinks. I think this is misleading. Surely there should be at least one beer and one mini bottle of wine in a mini-bar? Drinks in the Above and Beyond restaurant are very expensive and I was served an extremely small measure - about two egg cups full. Also do not be too excited about the 'views' which are described on the website. Yes the views from Above and Beyond are excellent, but from the rooms, what you mainly see is roof tops of the nearby buildings.

Overall this would not be my first choice for a leisure weekend in HK. Just too many niggles and too expensive for the value you get. For business, then it's a good enough hotel.

I have mentioned these issues within the hotel questionnaire (which is sent to you afterwards), but despite inviting the hotel to comment and respond (an option provided in the feedback system) I have not had a response. I wonder if this might indicate an overall lack of sincere concern about customer satisfaction?

I do wish the hotel the best - we certainly need this kind of offering in Hong Kong (not stuffy but not too over-modern) but there is still some way to go before they hit the mark.

Stayed here for three nights as start point for extended trip. Not inexpensive, but great location, superb design, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast buffet is multi-cultural treat, and a great base to start the day. Easy access to/from airport via free airport shuttle busses and MTR. Good fitness centre and pool - albeit somewhat limited in cycling/running equipment. Would avoid rooms with adjoining doors - sound carries under door and HK/guests active on 24+ hour basis.

Stayed here for the 3rd time, and second this year and again service was wonderful. I gave feedback before with regards to a need for chilled water in the gym, this has now been implemented. I'm not 100% sure that this is from my feedback, but if it was then a great example of a business that listens to its customers needs. Special thanks to Nick Lam in the 'Above and Beyond' lounge, you never disappoint and the service is exemplary. Also in 'Green' Poon Ching Wan, Van thank you for all your attentive service. I always look forward to staying here. I will enjoy to return soon.

Room Tip: Always Harbour View, why would you not?

The staff at Hotel ICON was always willing to be helpful and friendly. The gym was exceptional - they even gave us water bottles. We loved having a cocktail on the deck overlooking HK. The view was stunning and the drinks were quite good. The concierge recommended wonderful restaurants, many of which were within walking distance. The rooms were spacious and well-maintained. The shower was especially interesting. The breakfast (which was included with our room) had a diverse selection of Chinese and Western food, all of which was very fresh and well-prepared. I would definitely stay at Hotel ICON when I return to HK. Excellent value and delightful stay.

Room Tip: Get a high floor for the view

Cause we tripped for three weeks around South East Asia and planned our trip by ourselves, we wanted to end in style where we started our trip a few weeks before. we booked 3 nights at the ICON hotel. We booked a 38 sq room facing the Victoria Harbour.

We arrived late in the evening so we hadn't had to queu for check in. We immediatly felt that the staff is very professional and would do everything to satisfy you. Very cool was also that you could sign with an optical pen on a touch screen for your deposit etc.

When we arrived at our room, we were a bit dissapointed. The room, the bathroom, the bed, the coffee machine, the minibar, ... briefly evertyting was perfect BUT we booked the hotel for the view too and that was a bit dissapointing cause we were facing Hong Kong Island but not the ICC, not the Bank of China building, not the ICC, ... We booked online and we thought that the 38 sq m rooms also had the same view as the rather standard room facing the 'harbour' but that they were on a higher level in the building. We went to the desk downstairs to ask for another room, which wasn't possible anymore for that night.

The day after we were changed, read, downgraded to a 'standard harbour king room' on a high level and we had the view we wanted. In first case they told us that they couldn't refund the difference between a 38 sq room and a standard room but whenI told them that the website doesn't supply pictures from the view of the 38 sq room, they aggreed with we and refunded the difference on our creditcard. It was only about 30 euro's or so but it was great that they fixed it!

We stayed in a lot of hotels in the world and have to say, the level of service is excellent here! We went to a wine taste and bought some bottles of wine there. Never thought we could drink them around the pool, watching the Hong Kong skyline. We get glasses from the waiter and he opened our bottle in front of our eyes. And we didn't ask anything ... they keep an eye on everything what happens there! GREAT!

The swimmingpool and the sauna are really nice to relax after a busy day in the city of Hong Kong!

We'll be back for sure !

Didn't try the breakfast

I could tell you about the great views, wonderful location and all the usual stuff but I want to share a story that makes this hotel really stand out and stand above the others. We checked out and caught a taxi outside the hotel and went the airport. Like an idiot I left the oil painting I bought in an antique shope on Hollywood Road in the boot of the taxi. I called the hotel and and emailed them when I got back with the sad story. Most hotels would wipe their hands of it and say bad luck and that would be it. The Icon somehow tracked down the taxi driver and recovered the picture and sent it back by registered mail. Brilliant......And the hotel was superlative in all other ways as well. They deserve their top ranking.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the harbor - you won't be disappointed. And make sure you go the...
