Excellent experience!

I'd strongly recommend staying here. It was our first trip to Hong Kong and I'd have no hesitation in coming back! Excellent service from ALL staff, very friendly and helpful. Showers always hot, shower gel provided, tv in room, air con and fan in room. Wifi in room is a good connection too! Location in Chung King Mansions is right in the heart of one of the busiest places in HK. Rooms are a little on the small side but that didn't bother us at all. Thanks very much for a great stay!

The best budget-friendly hostel there is in HK

Chung King Mansions is a popular destination especially for back packing travelers or those who are on a budget travel. I've been to Chung King Mansions in the past but stayed in a different hostel. In my last visit, we tried Apple Hostel because of the reviews I've read. True enough, the rooms are better than the last placed I stayed in in June. Expect that the rooms are small but not as cramped as the other hostels in Chung King. The best part of this hostel is the staff. They were very friendly and accommodated all of our requests during our stay. They proactively changed our bed sheets and provided towels---a mark of good customer service. While they are not 4 or 5 star, I'll give this a 5 star in the hostel industry.

Be realistic

Chungking Mansions on Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui is right in the middle of the mainland - Rangoon. This hostel is one of many which have opened in what were designed originally as apartments. There isn't much space in each room, but the corollary is that rooms cost a third of the price of the cheapest proper hotel rooms in Hong Kong where space is at a massive premium
All the hostels provide pretty much the same - a simple bed (on which I slept very well) a sink, loo and shower over, and the Apple throws in a kettle in your room and use of a fridge and microwave so you can eat cheaply too. Plus airconditioning. Rooms are kept very clean, done every day. The towels are washed thin but still dry you. This isn't luxury accomodation but the staff are all cheerful and very helpful with queries about how to or where is and make a person feel properly welcome. There is free very stable wifi too.
Yes, the whole complex could certainly use more lifts and fewer sellers of knock off watches lurking but these latter seemed slightly fewer and less agressive than last year and it's hardly fair to blame the hostel for the lift which is not under their control
To stay in one of these hostels demands a certain willingness to accept a basic accomodation, but with such a huge saving it ill behoves someone to get snotty about the room size etc

great value

after i read all the bad reviews i thought i can manage to stay here.
but when i arriived i was really irritated by all the hawkers and the long waiting at the elevator. after seeing the room i thought i can't live here more than two days and i regretted instantly that i paid for a week in advance!
well that was a week ago and tomorrow i'll be leaving. i must say i learned to like this place! first of all it feels like an authentic hongkong experience. its small and i'm a tall guy with 2m (6ft5) but i managed to get comfortable.
second of all you have privacy and your own bathroom for the price of a hostel dorm room.

the three biggest drawbacks:
- chunking mansions and the hawkers
- very busy elevator with waiting time of 15 min to go up
- in my room i had a tiny window and i couldnt tell the weather when i woke up since the window faces a wall

what i did about it:
- hawkers leave you alone right away when you have headphones on and just shake your head at them
-i considered it a workout and took the stairs. you can stop on third floor at taj mahal: great indian food!
- i checked the weather on the iphone

like i said i learned to live with it and i appreciate the value and nice service you get!

i asked if i could get my money back if i want to leave 3 nights earlier and it was no problem. i would have had to pay the visa fees but that was it.

Too claustrophobic for me, but helpful staff

First, the pros: The hostel is quite clean and, by Chungking Mansion standards, it's practically spotless. It has been renovated recently and it is well maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful. When I let them know I would only be staying for one out of my scheduled 7 nights, they were very helpful and understanding and din't try to rake me over the coals.

Now, the cons: Why did I only stay one night? The rooms are, to be frank, tiny. I booked a single room and I could touch both walls without even stretching my arms all the way and the only sunlight to enter the room was through a small window at the back. It's like sleeping in a closet.

This isn't, however, Apple Hostel's fault. They advertise truthfully and those who know Chungking Mansions probably know what they are getting into. I probably overestimated my comfort level and bit off more than I can chew, but I don't think I can blame them for that...

As far as the complaints about the lifts, the cleanliness of the buildings, the touts asking if you want to buy bags/suits/drugs, this is totally out of Apple Hostel's hands unless they want to move locations. It's Chungking Mansion and even now that it's "cleaned up" it will always be a bit of a cesspit.
