Oriental Lander Hotel
Ranked #368 of 730 Hotels in Hong Kong
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We stayed at the Oriental Lander Hotel for 5 days earlier this month. The location is not fantastic - it is on the wrong side of Kowloon, about a 10 minute walk to Prince Edward MTR, and most cabbys do not know the location of the Hotel unless you show them the address.

Pros: the rooms are clean and the air-conditioning is a welcome respite from the festering heat of the Chinese summer. The toilets are also very clean and the towels are changed everyday. The beds are firm (if you like firm beds - good for the back) and the sheets are crisp. The hot water from the shower is awesome for washing off the grime of Hong Kong.

Cons: the rooms are very, very small. Tiny does not begin to describe it. Woe to you if you travel with big suitcases, because I don't know where you are going to find the space to open them in the room (unless you open them on the bed). The pillows are so soft that you might as well sleep without them. I had to ask for extra pillows just to have enough neck support. And showering with the shower curtains drawn is damn near impossible. There are also limited amenities and conveniences around the Hotel. No wi-fi from the rooms either. Free wi-fi is available at the lobby but nowhere else. They have internet dongles for rent, but they cost an arm and a leg.

Word of caution: the walls are very thin, so if you were as unfortunate as us in having noisy mainland Chinese for neighbours, bring some earplugs.

Overall: good value for money. We did not break the bank, had a relatively good night's rest each night (we were too tired to care about the noise from next door), and the MTR whisks you to all parts of Hong Kong in a matter of minutes, anyway.

Room Tip: Ask for a twin room, and push the beds together if you want a bigger double bed.

Preparing for the trip, my friend and I were searching for cheap and convinient hotels to stay at for our 4 nights in Hong Kong and we came across this on Agoda.

Overall, the place was initially slightly diffiult to locate, but it was probably that we were not familiar with that area. But it was a safe place to walk to even in the night as we only checked in about 10pm. The hotel had both a nice exterior and interior. The staff helped us check in and we proceeded up to our room. Upon entering , our room was pitch black and we tried to find the slot to insert the key card, but it was really dark , even by the light that came in from the corridor, it was not quite sufficient for us to find the key slot. But we managed to located it after a while, conversing in Cantonese with the receptionist.

It was a small and cozy room and there is just sufficient space for 1 person to be walking around the room. The toilet was also small, but it was clean and had just enough space for me to shower it. Which was good enough for us both as we just required a clean and comfortable place to put up at. The only downside was that the walls were pretty thin so we could hear our neighbours talk at 2am.

Overall, my experience at Oriental Lander was good and I will choose to come back again in future.

If you stay in Hong Kong and do not plan on spending much time in your room, this is the Hotel for you. It carries all the bear essential; a comfortable bed, a clean bathroom with powerful hot shower, free internet access, fridge and TV. The location of the Hotel is good, if you want to explore Kowloon markets such as flower market, goldfish market, Fa Yuen Street market and Temple Street Night Market. Overall our stay was reasonably pleasant, however the walls are very thin. So if you are a light sleeper you may be disrupted by the neighbor’s TV. We would definitely use this Hotel again for a short stay in Hong Kong.
Cleaning personal friendly – noted left items – reception very cold and unfriendly

Room Tip: I am not aware of different room choices.

Im not really sensitive with room size cos all I need is a bed and a good bathroom but I have to say that rooms in this hotel are small. We've booked a triple room and we're really squeezed in. Going in and out of the room, we've to, sort of, fall in line cos only one person can fit in that short hallway. I find it funny though, new experience.

Their bottled waters are not complimentary. They have 6-8 bottles in the ref but each costs HK$4. They only have one outlet in the room so bring an extension cord. They provide toiletries, hair dryer and an adapter. They also have flat screen TVs that are hanging on the wall but good luck finding an English channel. Complimentary LAN inside the room, WIFI is available only at the lobby.

The bathroom, I bumped my knees and elbows on the wall plenty of times when i was taking a shower. I feel like Snow White living in the dwarves' home. LOL

The lobby is too small. The staff, well I wouldn't say they aren't friendly, i think its just their culture. They try to be helpful and answer our queries.

Location. about 5mins walk to and from Prince Edward MTR which makes this hotel very accessible.

From the airport, I took the Airport Express until Tsing Yi Station (costs HK$60), interchanged to the Yellow Line (Tung Chung line) and got off at Lai King Station. From Lai King Station, I rode the Red Line (Tsuen Wan line) and got off at Prince Edward where I took the Exit C2 and walk until the Tong Mi St where the hotel is.

Oriental Lander Hotel is almost in front of the Mong Kok Fire Station.

If you aren't meticulous with the room size and just looking for a place to sleep in after exploring HK, I'd recommend this hotel as it is budget friendly. Its in Mong Kok area so near the shopping areas as well.

Stayed for 3 nights.

Staffs - were not really friendly. Waited for quite long before we could get our room (The staffs mentioned that the room was not ready yet, quite a lot of people crowding at the counter at that moment)
Location wise - Very good as it is 10 min walk to Prince Edward mrt station.

An average hotel, it won't go wrong or disappoint your trip. For us, we're OK to stay here again if we want to re-visit HongKong without going through the headache of finding the next comfortable hotel.

Room Tip: Probably not good room but ask the staff what time is your room available so you can plan your trip...

I came here with my partner and mother and booked a triple size room. After reading the reviews of the size of the room we were bit hesistated to stay here for 4 nights. The hotel is great, atmosphere is good and staff are helpful. The room isn't that small we were able to fit 6 luggages inside however the bathroom was not expected! Very close to markets and restaurants. Our only dissappointment was when we checked out and asked for a taxi to be called a staff member told us to take the taxi already outside when it was already allocated for another guest. We told him that and he ignored us and was rude about it. Did not want to help us at all. Overall it's a good hotel to stay at if you're not going to be inside all the time!

Just average for this hotel, the room was too small.
Have to take turn to walk around inside the room with a small floorspace beside bed toward bathroom.
Our luggage have to put on bed or else we couldn't open our door to exit the room.
A bit distant from Prince Edward MTR,walk about 10 min. Located near the hardware street.
Another budget hotel.
