“consistently great.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2012

second and third visit. this time for dim sum first then dinner. the hargow at this restaurant is simply the best i have tasted. large juicy and bursting with brilliant sesame and prawn flavour. the shanghainese dumplings in chilli and sour sauce are terrific, spicy, meaty with a wonderful dippy sauce and little bundles of knotted noodles. the 'fish skulls' with dried scallions are delicate fish heads with intense ginger, garlic and scallion flavours. when we went for dinner we had steamed clams with black bean sauce, 17/20 scallops and broccoli showed a delicate touch with still crunchy vegetables and plump just cooked scallops. wonderful. tofu with vegetables were amazing. deep fried tofu can sometimes be a bit dry but these ones were incredibly silky. the vegetables cooked with them were mini bok choy and shittake mushrooms. asparagus with crab was maybe least successful. although good i thought the asparagus could have been cooked for just a minute or two more. the house wine (french) was unspeakably awful. apart from that we have always been impressed by the quality of this restaurant. the waiters dont speak good english but if you are patient enough they alway do their best to help. definately worth many visits. wish this was my local.

“Astronomical price!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2012

We have walked by this restaurant (Happy Valley branch) many times and it always looked full so we decided to give it a try last night - well it was our first try and will also be our last try.

It was a bustling, loud restaurant and we didn't have a reservation but we were given a table almost immediately. Staff not overly friendly but they weren't unfriendly either, we were not their regulars and it showed in their service.

We had a steamed fish, 3 prawns (one each), garlic fried choi sum (vegetable) and fried rice - bill came to $1300 HKD (approx $167 USD). Definitely felt like we were given the "special foreigner's price". Food is one bar above mediocre.

Really can't recommend this place because for that price you have way better choices in close by Time Square with much better service and atmosphere.

“The dimsum was divine!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2011

We tried this restaurant [Hankow road branch] after reading about it in trip advisor. We went for late lunch at 3pm, just in time for dim sum hour. It was a huge restaurant and was packed, but we were immediately seated. The staff was very courteous, from the receptionist to the wait staff, to the other attendants, contrary to what i read about the Kimberly road branch. There was always someone who could speak English, so it was easy to get an English menu, tick from the list what we want, and communicate our orders or special requests.

We were a group of 5 hungry, big eaters plus 1 child with an appetite. Our orders arrived after 20 mins. We ordered 2 of each:
Steamed spareribs, shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling, scallops with asparagus dumpling [must try!], rice flour with asparagus roll [must try!!!], steamed rice topped with chinese sausage and chicken [yummmmmmy!], steamed rice with spareribs, barbecue pork bun, chinese sausage rolls.

Prices were very reasonable: pork rolls/buns [3 pcs per order] at HK$ 19, the dimsum [4 pcs per order] at HK$ 22-25, the rice toppings [good for 2 pax] at HK$ 25 each. tea was HK$8 per person. What surprised me was the charge of HK$5 per person for sauces. I don't know if that's standard practice in HK restaurants.

Overall, we were immensely satisfied and stuffed. We spent approximately HK$ 120-150 per person, which, was great value for money considering the quality of the dim sum!

Since the queues were long during lunch and dinner time, we opted for take out during peak hours. We went back another time for their very affordable rice toppings.

Service 4.5/5. Taste 5/5. Cleanliness 4/5. Value for money 5/5.

“Can't wait to visit again.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2011

This was our first restaurant experience in Hong Kong after a long flight, we were looking for a good value for money meal. We were not disappointed, the staff were fantastic, the food great, so much so we returned on our last night in town. It's an obvious favorite with the locals, we were almost the only "round eyes" there, and the staff remembered us on our return - highly recommended.
