Description: Reminiscent of an ancient family courtyard in one of Peking's fast disappearing hutongs (courtyard houses set between narrow lanes), Hutong's interiors are set against the most breathtaking skyline of any international metropolis. This is not the only surprise. The sense of adventure and sheer avant-garde creativity continues in the innovating cuisine inspired by the culinary styles of Peking and Shandong province.

We had a wonderful view from high up of Earth Hour over Hong Kong Island with the main advertising boards turned off. Good service and excellent food. The steamed asparagus dipped in sesame seeds was a great starter. The steamed cod with garlic and chilli was the star of the evening. The crispy duck was also very tasty. Pleasant surroundings for an enjoyable evening.

Was informed this was one of the best restaurants in Hong Kong - it wasn't for me! Light show ok but not great. Colleague was drinking white wine, asked for red and the waiter just poured red wine into a glass with white wine already in it. Quite dark inside the restaurant and was noisy when we were there. Food was interesting - we had a set menu…..courses were coming at different times to the same table and some people just missed out on some of them!

Hutong is one of those restaurants that at times can be perplexing. The food is wonderful. The view is amazing – the Hong Kong skyline from Kowloon is romantic and seductive. The wines by the glass are super.

So how can the service be so uneven? We had to ask for water several times. We asked questions about the wine list and the waiter had to go ask someone else – more than once. They tried pulling plates away before we were finished. They were inexperienced – you have to get a start sometime and somewhere. But you should also have a manager who is looking over service more closely.

Now to the good stuff – we had pre-ordered the Beggar’s Chicken. If you haven’t had this before, it’s well worth having to remember to order in advance. The chicken is seasoned and then wrapped in lotus leaf. It is covered with clay and then slow cooked inside the clay in an oven. When they bring the chicken to the table, you are handed a wooden mallet to break the clay. The chicken is then taken away and it is returned on a platter with steam and aromas lifting from the dish. The meat is so tender and literally falls off the bones.

With the chicken we ordered an interesting asparagus dish. It was perfectly cooked and had an unusual twist – one end of the asparagus appeared to have been dipped in honey and then rolled in sesame seeds. It added a nice crunchy texture to the dish. We also had a yam dish with a spicy sauce.

We had a couple of glasses of wine – Soul Mate had a buttery chardonnay from Bouchard Pere et Fils. I was surprised to see it offered by the glass. I had a very tasty Medoc.

Despite the clunky service, we’d go back. In fact, we almost did for a second time on this trip but became tempted instead by Spanish food on our last night.

We had trouble finding the restaurant initially but it was worthwhile. On the 27th floor with clear views over the harbour, it is a stunning location, especially from a window table that we enjoyed. Food was good with a wide choice and service was fine too. This is not an inexpensive restaurant but taking all things into account, worthy of a visit.
