“Good budget option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for one night in a twin room. It is a bit hard to find at first as it is inside the block in what feels a bit like a maze at first and the sign downstairs said it was on a different floor to our confirmation email (the confirmation email is correct though!).

However, when we finally found the hostel, we were pleasantly surprised that the room was fine if a little damp and the staff were lovely and really helpful. The little bathroom inside the room had a nice hot shower which after a long flight was just what we wanted. The location of the hostel is great, just around the corner from the mtr station and on Nathan road itself.

Recommended as a budget option!

To all those tourists going to HK for the 1st time, please avoid Chungking Mansion if you can, especially this hostel.

I had first hand experience in this hostel.

Me and my friends booked via hostelsclub.com a week before we were to set foot in HK.

We booked a triple room with 3 private beds in Oriental Pearl Hostel (under HostelHK brand) and paid the downpayment online. This hostel is at the 3/F of the Chungking Mansion, TST.

We arrived late already (we informed the hostel staff beforehand) and we were given a triple room with 3 single beds. The room was clean and nice. We said to ourseleves, it's not that bad after all.

But the morning after, the Chinese frontdesk lady told us to evacuate the room where we were staying and told us to leave our bags at the hostel's 'lobby' (this is more like the floor's public hallway because HK hostels do not really have enough space in every floor to even have a formal lobby). We asked the lady why we still need to be transferred to a different room when we are already properly settled in the room that she gave us. She told us that that was not the room that was intended for us. She just allowed us to use that room because they were fully booked. Then when we asked her where she will be transferring us, she said to us to just get back to her later that day. Since we were hurrying up to go to Disneyland, we just decided to settle it after we return from Disneyland.

When we got back later in the evening, we were surprised that our bags were still at the 'lobby'. Earlier that day, the frontdesk lady told us that she will be transferring our luggage in our new room by noontime. But we decided to be mum about it and just kept our cool. When we were led to the new room where we will be staying (at Block D of Chunking Mansion), it was a nightmare! It only had 2 beds - one bigger than the other. And the bigger bed was just placed on an elevated floor. The worst part of it, there were bedbugs crawling from the foam to the bedsheet. Just imagine that. Me and my friends are not really choosy but it's a different thing when you see bedbugs in your bed and still sleep on it. We argued with the frontdesk lady and told her that our reservation was for 3 private beds and if she can't give back the room where we stayed during our first night, she better give us a better room with 3 private beds (our original reservation) with no crawling bedbugs. The lady did not even care. End result, we had to sleepover to a friend's friend's pad in HK. We had no choice.

Next morning, it's a good thing that the manager of the hostel was there. My friends told the manager about what happened to us and about our booking. The manager was polite enough to give us back the room where we stayed during our first night. And since we had to go to Macau the next day, we talked to the manager if we can leave our luggage over night since we are staying in Macau for one night. The male manager was nice enough to allow this but we still paid for the room where we stored our luggage while we were in Macau.

After talking to the manager, we did not have any bad event anymore. As for the frontdesk old Chinese lady (her name is Chan), we did not bother to transact with her anymore apart from surrendering our room keys to her on our last day.

Overall, Chunking is cheap but expect cheap service (if not a bad experience) as well.

Seriously, the hotel is so terrible and horrible.
Many foreigners stay inside the building and make people so uncomfortable.
The cleanliness so bad, i and my friends felt itch when you sleep on the hostel's bed.
at last, we all got the skin allergy due to the dirty bedsheet.

Somemore, the bathroom is too small and unclean. The Overall opinion of the hostel is very very very suck!! Please do not doubt on my comment. Thanks :)

The price is cheap especially when we book online through https://www.hostelsclub.com. The room accommodation and facilities just like 3 star hotel but shrink into small Asian couple size. Small but good for budget traveler who will stay in the room just for sleep. It is too difficult to get a cheap hotel/hostel without booking in Hong Kong. Too crowded city with high living cost especially food and accommodation. The place Chungking mansion is very strategic location in Hong Kong. Easy to go everywhere by walking, bus, taxi and sub train (just under the building). The people (both Muslim and Chinese) are so kind and helpful without any discrimination of religious and races. Muslims travelers should stay here because the mansion is a one stop center for halal food and cheap China made electronics gadgets. Other place is hard to find halal foods. Even tenants from top 5 star hotels come here to get this things. If your check out at early time, don't worry to ask help from the front desk officer to look into your belongings with free of charge. Internet and fixed line are free every where in Hong Kong, the hostel also provide free PC for their tenants. When you are here, don't forget to watch Hubble movie at the space museum. You will be impress! Send my regards to Miss Chan.

Room Tip: If you are in couple don't try use single room. Too small especially non-asian traveller.

Oriental Pearl is located in Chungking Mansions, big building in Kowloon with a lot of cheap hostels, restaurants and shops in. The dorm room was rather small and very low - pretty claustrophobic. It was clean, no bedbugs, with shower (and hot water!). There are no matresses on beds, just kind of foam (?), it's hard surface anyway. Notice that there is no common room in the hostel! Atmosphere was great, but it's because of other backpackers in hostel. And the price was ok.

We booked a 4 beds in a 8-bed room. Finally, they gave us a private room for 4 people with bathroom. The room was extremly small. Firstly, it looked clean but soon we realized it is not that clean. Definitely, the room had bed bugs. The best thing is its excelent location. The price was okey - comparing to other offers.
