I recently travelled to Hong Kong for 4 nights with my 9 year-old daughter.
When I booked my stay at the Travellers Friendship Hostel, the pictures showed "Deluxe" Rooms which seemed very nice. However there was NO facility in place to book said "Deluxe" rooms - just standard rooms
Upon arrival, and having paid for a Standard Twin room with ensuite, I can safely say that there is a vast difference between the quality of the Deluxe and Standard rooms.
I paid at the Travellers Friendship counter, and was promptly taken to the USA Hostel on the other side of the building. This seems to be a pretty common practice, as a number of other travellers I encountered said the same thing.
I stayed one night in the standard room and enquired about upgrading for the remaining 3 nights and was told that this was possible, at a cost of $200HK per night, but I would have to pay for 4, even though I'd only be staying 3.
Needless to say, I was not going to pay for a night I would not even be sleeping in the room, and so I elected to remain in the standard room.
The standard rooms are small - even by asian standards.
It was not possible to sit on the toilet and close the door, as the bathroom was so small.
Additionally there were exposed electrical wires in the bathroom, upon being notified about, management then proceeded to tape up (see photo) you will also see that the light is hanging by one bolt only.
You get what you pay for. This place costs, peanuts, and so you get the monkey cage I spose
