Gateway Hotel Hong Kong
Ranked #36 of 721 Hotels in Hong Kong
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 13, 2011

When you book this hotel there are plenty of warnings regarding the ongoing renovations, so if you don't like drilling that starts at 9am and ends at 5.30pm precisely, this is not the hotel for you. As I am never in my room between those hours it made little difference, be aware that it is currently the 5th floor that is being completely remodelled from a floor of bedrooms to a floor of restaurants.

The hotel bedrooms are tired, hence the renovations. Also, the hotel has no restaurant and no bar, it just has a breakfast (excellent it was too) room. However there are three Gateway Hotels all in walking distance on the same road and you can use the facilities in all of them, even billing drink/food directly to your room. The Marco Polo is the best, just opposite the Star Ferry terminal. It has a small swimming pool and and great bar with equally great staff. If you want your Hong Kong cliché photos of Victoria Peak in the background this is the place for your snapping

The hotel is built into a shopping mall so you can walk straight out of reception into hundreds of air-conditioned shops. There is no need to take a taxi or use the underground as everything is within walking distance. I took the ferry to Hong Kong (HKD2) but got caught out with the last ferry back. It is a very early 11:30pm, a HKD2 ferry fare turned into a HKD160 taxi fare! To get to/fro the airport use the Express Railway and get off at Kowloon Station then get a taxi, it is a big saving in time and money vs. a taxi.

This is a value for money hotel in a great location with very helpful staff which I would stay in again, even if the renovations were still ongoing.

had a great time with my family when we stayed here

the staff was great. especially those at the lobby. they will even take your picture and send it to your email as a memento of this place

for tours to disneyland, oceanpark etc... you just book it at the lobby... there's a person in charge for booking this

the hotel is near the mrt so you can easily go to mongkok to shop

its about 5-10 minutes walk to the 1881 heritage, clock tower, avenue of stars

you can watch the symphony of lights easily around 8pm by just walking a few minutes

great stay, had fun... big comfy beds...

the only bad thing was there were bed bugs that bit us... i dont know if its from the bed or rug actually but despite that the stay in this hotel was great

bring your own travel adaptor... the hotel charges 80hkd for one

Though the hotel is a little far from where the nearest MRT station is, shoppers need not worry much as the Ocean Terminal shopping center is at its door step. Restaurants are not far but they are not the best ones you could find in Hong Kong. Hotel rooms are old and worn out. It is strongly recommended for the hotel to renovate its rooms asap or its competitiveness would soon disappear regardless how great the location of the hotel is. Provided the condition of the hotel's facilities, everything there seemed overpriced!!

Marco-Polo Gateway is conveniently located to transport - for your ferry services to Macau, mainland and the mtr.
It is undergoing refurbishment - none too soon. The psychadellic carpets and dark wood panelled cupboards, carpeted luggage racks (carpet in the room I stayed in was a beige / brown with purple / magenta swirls), give the hotel a dated look and feel.
It was clean and comfortable.
My international travel adapter did not work and you have to purchase one HKD68 from the hotel. The hotel leads into a shopping mall and is easily accessible to Kowloon station either by MTR or a short taxi ride for the train to the airport.
towels were large, clean, soft and not old and frayed. A plate of fruit is provided as is the usual tea and coffee.

Very good location right alongside the Star Ferry and Bus Station. Friendly, courteous, friendly staff. Very quick, efficient check-in, we arrived at 6.00 a.m. after a 12 hour flight from Australia and joy of joys our room was ready. The restaurants are very different but all good and the Bar served very good light meals. The Peking Duck rolls were divine and some great puds.

I booked a room on Club Level via the internet 4 months prior to my arrival. When I arrived the room shown was very disappointing and smelled of cigarettes. After my complaint the room was changed instantly. Decor of room is in need of decoration and shows a lot of wear, bathroom needs to be completely refurbished. Service of the staff was overall very attentive and polite. Considering the lack of fitness facilities or pool in house the room was overpriced. The main reason why I stayed at this hotel was the location, unbeatable for Wan Chai and meetings in Kowloon.

This is a hotel which is situated in the heart of shopping district of Hong Kong. The hotel is within the Harbour Mall and provides great opportunity for shopping and after-work-activties. The staff are warm and the hotel is very cosy. What I liked about the hotel is an excellent set of staff members who go out of the way to serve the guests. The restaurant Coffee Mill is good but lacks variety. Largely the cuizine is Chinese so can become a problem for travellers from the other part of the world. What is not so good about the hotel is that the televisions ate still old fashioned and not very clear. Also, the hotel does not have its own gym. Guests will have to avail gym facilties in their sister hotel near-by.
