Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel
Ranked #28 of 729 Hotels in Hong Kong
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 30, 2013

I often stay at Renaissance hotels on business and generally would strongly recommend the RHV. The rooms are good by HK standards, the harbour view ones are particularly good! The staff are excellent, you receive a warm welcome with as much assistance as needed but nothing over the top. The hotel is well located in Wan Chai for the exhibition centre, the MTR, the star ferry and has a plethora of good restaurants within easy walking distance. The service in the business lounge is excellent and the breakfast buffet ensures that whatever you like for breakfast you can find something to eat.

The niggles? Well currently there is a lot of land reclamation going on nearby which means if you are in a harbour view room, the noise of the machines overnight can be annoying (not the hotel's fault but best to be aware!). If you have a garden view room you overlook a playground which is generally fine during the week but at weekends can be pretty noisy, even on the much higher floors. Again not a particularly big deal, but could be annoying of you are trying to adjust to time changes.

All in all though a good choice for a centrally located business hotel.

The Renaissance Harbour View is located in Wan Chai at the edge of the water, connected to the convention center. If you have a room with a view of the harbour you will have a great view of the harbour and Kowloon.

Getting there -- there are a number of ways to get to or from the hotel to the Airport.
1) Book a limo from the hotel itself -- about HK$ 700 one way (~USD $90)
2) Take a taxi to or from the Airport - about $HK 375 (~USD $50)
3) Take the Airport Express Train (Highly recommended) -- about $HK 100 (~USD $13)

The Airport Express is a train that leaves the Hong Kong airport every 10 minutes, and makes two quick stops (Tsing Yi and Kowloon) before coming to the Hong Kong side (which is where the Hotel is located). It takes about 24 minutes for the journey, and avoids any traffic issues. Upon arriving at the Hong Kong Station - you have a free option to take the bus (I think it was H4 but please double check) from the station to the hotel directly (which runs about every 15 - 20 minutes). Alternatively, there are tons of taxis at the station and you can take a taxi directly to the hotel (~HK$45-50). Total travel time comes out to be about 45 minutes to an hour. If you are heading back to the Airport, just reverse these directions.

The cost of Airport Express is HK$100 for a one way ticket, but if you are traveling with a friend, or a group, there are group discounts available which are not well advertised. For two people, the cost drops to HK$ 80 and sinks further the larger the number of travelers. However, you cannot buy these at the machines -- you need to ask at the "live" counter with a real person. Just ask for a multiple person discount ticket.

Rooms - the room we had was clean and crisp, and although a tad on the "small" side, was highly efficient in how the room is laid out. It faced the harbour, and provided a nice view of the Star Ferry.

The Star Ferry (also highly recommended) which will carry you over to the Kowloon side for a mere HK$2.50 is located only 3 minutes by walk from the hotel. The Wan Chai MTR subway station is about 5-8 minutes away by walk and as previously mentioned, the hotel is physically attached to the Convention Center.

Overall, a typical Renaissance or Marriott type of room and experience, asia quality customer service, and a location that could be good but depends on what you want.

Stayed here with our three kids in January for three nights. Rooms were very clean and modern. Booked two rooms next to each other, plenty of space for all of us. The harbour view was amazing, particularly at night. Staff were excellent, they helped us with all our needs and our many questions. Make sure you have the breakfast at the hotel as well! Probably the best breakfast we've ever had at a hotel. Our kids enjoyed the pool and the playground there as well. Overall an excellent stay!!

The room had recently been renovated so I was expecting the facilities to be of an equally high standard. The health club was a 5 min walk in the adjoining hotel and not great compared with others in HK. While the ferry is next door and very convenient, there are more convenient places to stay - closer to the MTR, shopping and dining. This is not a bad hotel, there are just better ones nearby.

Me and husband stayed in the deluxe suite during december because of our wedding held there. The room was big with living room and bedroom separated and two washrooms. The main washroom was as big as the bedroom and was very modern. And there was a small bathroom in the living room for guests to use. The view was stunning. We looked out the window in the morning, convention center in front of the hotel and could see Icc on kowloon side. No other tall building in front that blocked the view. I was sure the room was a perfect location to see fireworks during Chinese new year. I was satisfied with the room service that 24 hours could call them to order food and the delivery was quick. The complimentary breakfasts were so rich and fresh. We ordered two American breakfasts. The staffs were helpful and polite. We think it is worth value to stay. Overall we were happy during the stay.
