This is a beautiful piece of architecture. Unfortunately, without strict city planning, rising skyscrapers are threatening to really spoil things. Also, the maintenance has not been up to scratch so that the water feature and the 2 pavilions could have been nicer. Still, we were really pleased with the assortment of of arts and craft shops in the building though we felt really sorry for the shopkeepers 'cos things were really quiet in March when we visited. Guess, only when the 3-gorges cruise season swings into high gear would the crowds start coming. We really hope this place can be restored to its glory days.

Hongya cave is a fairly standard Chinese souvenir and food area. There are a lot of fun shops and tastes treats to be had.

Hong Ya Dong (Dong means Cave in Chinese)is an important landmark of tourism in Chongqing. It is situated just blocks from the JieFangBei Tower and overlooks the JiaLing River. HongYaDong has an amazing river view and is one of the prime spots to sit and have a drink and unwind after a long day in Chongqing. At night, the rooftop is lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, making the traditional Chinese style architecture look very picturesque. There are many touristy restaurants and bars inside ranging from local chinese food of all kinds(hotpot, skewers, snacks and treats) to Western Food and Bars. The building was built as a sort of central tourist attraction for Chongqing, where people can come to shop for gifts, get some tea, or have dinner.

While it is an important Chongqing tourist location, it's also a little tacky and over commercial and suffers from the fairly typical disney-fying of chinese culture prevalent in many local sights. However it is certainly worth going just to see the view of the river from the top of the structure(which is actually street level in JieFangBei.) The building is built going up the hill, so the bottom of the building is at the bottom of the river and the top of the building is a street level lookout of the JiaLing river in JieFangBei.
Some of the restaurants and bars include the Cactus Bar and Grill(Mexican), The Harp(Irish Pub), Tiki Bar(outdoor beer garden in park like setting) and coming soon, Cliff's Bar(the old location was the best bar in Chongqing by far so i'm expecting big things from the new Cliff's opening in HongYaDong in late march, 2014.)
There is also a lot of shopping and touristy stores selling gifts and trinkets. If you want to buy Chinese souvenirs to bring back home, this or CiQiKou are the best places in town to buy them. As a local foreign expat living in Chongqing, I can say that this is not the most local of hangouts(although that will change with Cliff's and Tiki Bar moving in) but it is certainly worthy of your time just for the view and chance to see the old style architecture.

Hongya cave/hongyadong is one of the main touristy things to do in Chongqing. It's best in the evening when it's dark because the whole place is lit up with red lights. It's about 13 stories high with different levels of shops and restaurants, inlcuding an Irish Bar, Tex Mex Restaurant (the food is pretty good but a quite pricy), Subway and Nenlu Tea. It also has pretty nice views over the river from the top. Just be careful of buying things from the market stalls, it's definitely not the cheapest place to go shopping.

A new building on an old site, this is one of the premier tourist stops in Chongqing. Dining and shopping is best here.
