“Great Pizza, but Long time for a Drink”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2013

The food (especially the pizza) tastes very great here...and this for a really fair price. What's sometimes not so nice is the long waiting time until a waitress comes around and picks Ur drinking orders...little bit more staff for this good restaurant would be worth it!

Good beer and real stone oven pizza. It's not a wow experience but alright . Loud place rather for drinking than have dinner.

“Bartenders who know how to pour beer!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

I didn't actually eat anything at The Tree. Maybe I should have. Despite that, the beer is fantastic and reasonably-priced. It's always nice to go into a bar and be overwhelmed by a bunch of beers you've never heard of before. Also a nice selection of single malts and other 'spirits.'

The atmosphere is perhaps the best thing about this place. I was not expecting to enjoy a bar in Sanlitun this much, based on prior experience. I think this whole area is sort of an overwhelming place to land for a drink if you've never been there. Maybe you don't want to drink Carlsburg at a bar with pole dancers. If you only stay on Sanlitun street, you might feel like those are your only options. Head to the tree. Not a pole in site. A great bar. Good music (also a rarity! They had a guy doing Bob Dylan covers on one of the nights, but it wasn't too loud to have a conversation. Also played some Otis Redding and Rick James).

The bartenders actually know what they're doing, which means knowing how to pour a bottled beer in a glass. This is something you don't find a lot in China.

There's a youth hostel directly next to this place. So I think I know where I'm staying the next time I visit Beijing.

“Great Pizza”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2013

Located inside San Li Tun Bar street between the north and south village. This place has been here for more than 10 years and it hasn't changed its recipe for success.

If you are craving thin crusted pizza that resembles more Italian styled pizza this is the place to go.

This place has gotten a little pricey over the years but it is still worth checking it out.

At night this place is lively filled with noisy students that come to China to learn Chinese.

Some people say LA pizza is better than the tree, but it really depends on your preference.

If you could you should try both out.

Summary-
Great Italian Pizza
Noisy lively!

“Famed Pizza Pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2013

The Tree I'd describe as an institution as well as a Bar/Diner. It's been around for so long and contributed so much to the burgeoning of the Bar scene in Beijing.

Despite its current location, rather hidden away, it is constantly thronged, a tribute to the quality of what it offers. On entry you feel you've walked into a Pizzeria, which is effectively true. Almost the first thing you see are a couple of chefs busily crafting a wide range of excellent pizzas which would not be out of place in Italy to then fire them in the Italian designed wood-fired oven.

The pizzas are so good that you may tend to disregard other offers on the menu such as a robust Belgian Beer Stew and of course first rate frites. This would be a mistake. Make sure you have a pizza and go back another time to explore the rest.

Service is overall attentive though at times a bit offhand and the bar area run by very competent barmen. Indeed The Tree has trained and formed a number of barmen who now manage and even own bars around the area. It has also spawned two sister establishments under the same Belgian ownership: Nearby theTree and Beside the Tree. Not hard to spot the association....

The Tree well merits and rewards a visit or more. it has a great atmosphere enhanced by good live music regularly featured there.
