“Good US home cooking in the heart of the Chinese capital!”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

This restaurant's menu reminds you of a traditional US diner, food is good and hearty and the place is clean with friendly service.
Try one of their milkshake, great tastes for no money at all....

“AWESOME pancakes”
Reviewed November 6, 2010

We ate at the Grandma's Kitchen in Jianwai Soho. The portions were generous (e.g. bottomless coffee), and the pancakes were amazing -- fully recommend it.

“another modest alternative to chinese fare”
Reviewed October 29, 2009

the restaurat was clean and warm with service one might expect in the u.s. the kitchen prepared the food as best they could, a chinese interpretation of what could modestly pass as down home country food. i had the chicken fried steak dinner. the beef was a bit too thick and insufficiently pounded to tenderize. the flour and crumbs covering the somewhat tough beef could have been fried a bit more brown. the gravy and mashed potato was bland, but the college aged diners probably didn't know the difference. pricing was acceptable. if one wants an alternative to chinese food, grandma's kitchen is mildly acceptable. on my next visit, i will try their breakfast. hopefully the bacon will be crisp, the eggs served sunny-side up, with crisp on the outside hash browns and nicely browned jewish rye.

Average greasy spoon fare with nostalgia-for-truck stop appeal. Not a cheap bite, fuel up and work on the farm kind of place. Just a little piece of middle California away from home.
