Unique environment with helpful and attentive staff make for a most welcoming experience. First impressions can be off-putting but your stay is a rewarding experience. When Globalisation is driving communality it is encouraging that history and culture are being so favorably retained in such an accessible manner

We are glad to have the guests of your kind who can understand the real meaning of historical and cultural life in Beijing. The different life style survived from the damage of globalization and modernization is the national treasure of both of us. Thank you so much.

We stayed at both the Red Wall Garden and Double Happiness Hotels, and BOTH were wonderful! Whilst Red Wall was more expensive (and the overall quality better, as it's a 4-strar hotel) than Double Happiness (which was 3 star), both had their own unique charm, and being in slightly different parts of the city gave you a slightly different perspective - I'm rating 5 stars on Tripadvisor for both!

We really appreciate your kindness to compare Double Happiness with the No.1 hotel in Tripadvisor listing. We still have a lot of things to do to improve our hardware and service. A 5 star review for us is the great encouragement for our daily work, and hope to have another chance to serve you when you visit Beijing again.

My husband made this reservation and did his research on this place. If you want something quaint and historic with a feel for Hutongs, you should try the Double Happiness. The service was excellent. The room was completely renovated and the morning breakfast was plentiful. We spent four nights here and found it better than the Peninsula Hotel where we later joined our tour group. When we had to move to the Peninsula, the Double Happiness couldn't get us a taxi for the short ride, but they escorted us and our luggage to the main street and helped us commandeer a local taxi to make the short ride there. The staff went above and beyond with site and local touring suggestions and made sure we were comfortable.

Visiting Beijing with my son and my sister this was the perfect hotel for us. It has a fun atmosphere with very pleasant staff. Rooms are spacious unique and very clean. Beds and bedding comfortable. Shower was excellent, plenty of hot water. Breakfast buffet was excellent.Wii fi worked very well from anywhere in the hotel. Would highly recommend this little gem.

The location of the hotel is also famous for her featured food supply choice. Featured restaurants and lovely bars are surrounding in the old Hutong area. To try the typical Chinese food with various tastes is also the most important part of your stay in Beijing. Thank for your review.

IN this hotel, I felt that I was travelling back in time to ancient China where swordwielding martial artists & fair maidens lived.
A traditional wooden bed with intricate carvings of deer & the goddess of Mercy was the centrepiece in my room, resembling a set on a Chinese gongfu fighting series.
I was also exposed to fine aspects of Chinese culture such as tea brewing ceremony & a performance on Chinese musical instrument--guzheng in the bar.
Best of all, the hotel comes with modern amenities--a personal computer in individual rooms, complimentary fruit platter. The staff are exceptionally friendly & helpful. I was allowed early entry at 10am into my guest room/
Upon submission of a feedback form, every guest receives complimentary tea leaves!
The hotel also arranges for guided tours to the great wall with a local guide!

We stayed a total of six nights at Double Happiness, at the beginning and end of our Oct/Nov China trip. We loved the hotel—the staff was wonderfully friendly, helpful and spoke excellent English; the hotel was beautifully decorated; our two rooms (both were wedding suites) were lovely, immaculate, with modern conveniences; and the food was delicious and abundant. The perfect location of the hotel deserves special note: it is in a hutong untouched by tourism (unlike the hutong, for example, near the Bell Tower) where local people live, work, and shop; and it is also less than a10-minute walk from the Dongsi subway station, and we found the subway to be easy and convenient to use. The hotel also arranged two tours for us, which were highlights of our trip: their Mutianyu Great Wall trip included three hours of free time at the Wall and no forced shopping stop; and their acrobatics show was eye-popping spectacular. That we loved Beijing so much was in large part due to our fabulous stay at Double Happiness!

The hotel will also happily arrange/call taxis for you. Let them! Their regular driver is super. (He drove us to/from the airport.) The one night we hailed a taxi on the street to return to the hotel was our one and only bad experience in China. The first taxi driver who stopped for us couldn’t read the hotel’s card which contained directions, so we got out; the second taxi driver who stopped for us turned out to be con artist. These are the lessons we learned: (1) Ask the hotel to call a taxi for you whenever and wherever possible. (2) If you do hail one yourself, do not be deceived if a bona-fide-looking taxi stops for you – make sure that the driver’s photo and registration number are posted prominently on the dashboard. (3) Try to find out in advance how much your trip should cost, and if you get ripped off (we were overcharged by 4x) and want to report the driver, you will need to take a photo of the car’s license plate. Any receipt the driver gives you will likely be fraudulent (ours was). (4) Get out of the cab as soon as you realize you are being fleeced, before you confront and/or pay the driver. (Ours became verbally combative when he realized we knew he was crook.) (5) And if a taxi driver cannot figure out where the hotel is from the hotel’s instructions, tell him to take you to the Dongsi subway station and you can safely walk back to the hotel from there. Also, let the hotel staff teach you the proper pronunciation of Dongsi; if you say “dong-see,” people will not have the slightest clue what you are trying to say.
