“We loved it and we'll be back”
Reviewed July 17, 2011

We stayed a week at the hotel on July 2011. The people at the hotel were very nice and helpful. There was a buffet breakfast between 7.00-9.30 which was very tasty and there was enough to eat. In the rooms there was free tea/coffee available with a kettle and they donated two free water bottles each day too.

The hotel is located in a houtong ("4th") nearby the Dongsi subway station (10 minutes walk). There are also a lot of shops, restaurants and banks nearby. There is a free (Chinese censured) Internet access (wireless) available as well as a computer in rooms just in case you don't have any with you.

All in all, an excellent hotel with a good value! Only thing that bothered us was the trips the hotel offered; there was a mandatory visit to expensive jade and silk shops on the way to the Great Wall and we'd rather spent more time at the Wall. Also, the theatre (Kung-fu) "trip" was a joke basically - we were taken there by two cars (we had to change!) and after the second driver bough the tickets to us, he gave us 30 yuans for the return taxi. So, avoid the trips (they can be easily arranged by yourself).

Room Tip: reserve early, this hotel gets full easily

We chose our entire trip to Beijing from TripAdvisor and we were very pleased with everything. The hotel is lovely and the Chinese decor is gorgeous. The staff were very pleasant and very helpful. It is really interesting to be in a hutong area and to see how people live there. As other people said getting down the narrow road in a car is challenging but doable! However the subway station is a very short walk and getting around on the subway is so easy and efficient that we used that often. Going in July is perhaps not the best month as it was hot hot hot. Be very careful crossing roads in Beijing - it can be a life threatening experience! We were amazed at the size of all the sites we explored and visiting the wall was just amazing. Highly recommend Lucy, our guide, who we found on TripAdvisor but I have misplaced her card to repost her e-mail! She was wonderful, spoke excellent English and we learned a lot about China from her. Her husband is a wonderful driver (and believe me you will appreciate that!) and she arranged for airport collection and return for us. Highly recommend her.
There is a computer in the bedroom which was wonderful as we hadn't taken our own with us so we were still able to look up information that we wanted while there.

Room Tip: It seemed to me that all the rooms in this hotel looked nice.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights in July 2011. Had a great time. The room was really good opening up onto one of the courtyards. With a table and chairs outside our room, it was perfect to sit outside in the evening and have a beer.

Hotel staff were excellent, very helpful. We booked a tour through the hotel to the Great Wall, Tombs etc and it was fanstatic.

In our travels we enjoy walking about, being among the locals. That's what you get staying at the Double Happiness. The laneway walk from the hotel to the main street is around 500 or 600 meters .... so if you don't like walking that much, or expect to get a taxi outside the hotel, don't stay here.

Based on a Lonely Planet referral we ate dinner one night at the Crescent Moon restaurant, with Uighur (Western China / Muslim) cuisine. It was in a hutong three lanes away from the hotel. The food was OK .. not fantastic. Better than that, was a local restaurant in the same street as the Double Happiness. We ate their twice, it was so good. Got to recommend the Five Flower meal!! Unfortunately no name for the restaurant. But it's on the same side of the street as the hotel, and has timber and glass facade.

We stayed at Double Happiness in June 2011 with our two young boys aged 4 and 6. The hotel is awesome. It is quaint, very chinese in decoration, it has history! We could sit in the courtyard during the day and hear birds, but not traffic. There was room for our boys to run when they needed to and heaps of interesting things for them to look at - caged birds, goldfish, fountains. We booked a happy family room and asked for an extra bed. The extra bed was great quality - you wouldn't know it was a roll-away. Our room gave us plenty of space for kids to play, and adults to relax and included a computer and free internet access. All the modern conveniences you want but with a quaint historical charm. The staff were extremely friendly - always smiling and saying hello and most spoke good english - a few had excellent english. We booked the Kung Fu Show and a car and guide for the Great Wall with the hotel and were happy with the price and service. The hutong area the hotel is located in is thriving and is the real thing - not a tourist set up. We absolutely recommend this hotel!

There was an awesome Chinese restaurant down the road, turn right as you leave the Double Happiness and when you reach the small group of restaurants (including the large restaurant with the laterns) it is the last one in the line, just past the large restaurant. Very safe and fresh food. We ate there 3 nights the food was that good!

Stunning hotel. Very authentic. Fabulous and friendly receptionists who are a font of knowledge on where to go, what to do, see, where to eat...pretty much anything. Close to everything and I would recommend to anyone and will definitely go back...

Don't be put off by first impressions as it is down an alley in what appears to be a dodgy area, but appearances are deceiving. It is a delightful oasis in the middle of a huge and very busy city. My wife suffered a little from hotel envy as we walked past the Beijing Hotel and other grand hotels, but came to love the fact that you could sit in the courtyard and feel as if you were really a part of the city. You will remember this hotel long after you have forgotten the generic 4/5 star Western style hotels. Great staff, and a really interesting area.
