Hotel staff are friendly but hardly get any further information about the travel tips. Room condition is clean and neat. Room is facing housing area shop lot so is pretty quiet. Morning sunlight and shade of trees are another bonus for me. Overall am given 3.5 stars out of 5.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: Located in between HePing and QianMen light train station. about 7 minutes walk to the nearest bus station and most of the driver are friendly to provide useful information. Lots of street food nearby recommend the roast meat/barbecue behind the hotel in the Hutong, and most importantly pretty clean. Suggest to survey and have a full planning as the hotel staff may not have any idea of the actual route to your ideal restaurant or destination.

We stayed 3 nights here at the beginning of our tour and one The beds in the first room we were in were like a slab of concrete and made it almost impossible to sleep even after the 10 hour flight from the Uk. I did leave a comment on the questionnaire in the room and when we returned for our last night the room had a 3 inch mattress topper and we had a much better nights sleep. Not sure if my comment worked or if it was just pot luck. If I had realised that this was available I would have asked for one at the beginning of the holiday, but just assumed that this was the norm in China not having been there before. The hotel itself is a little shabby away from the main reception areas and the food we were served in the restaurant in the evening was poor and there was not enough for the 10 of us that formed the group, and the staff did not speak English. The breakfast buffet in the morning was just adequate. We found a small cafe opposite the main restaurant that was happy to serve us beer at a quarter of the price and twice the size of the beer sold in the hotel, which was 40 Yuan for a small bottle, and they smiled! Needless to say we returned there for our last night for a few beers before retiring to the mattress toppered bed before returning to the Uk the following day.

Room Tip: Ask for a mattress topper if there isnt one. Dont suffer in silence

We stayed here as part of our Travelsphere Tour, our room was large with two twin beds. All the usual home comforts hairdier, shampoo, conditioner etc.

The breakfast consisted of Chinese and European and we found there to be a good selection of cereals, toast, bacon, eggs, yogerts, fruit and various fresh bread rolls. We had an evening meal here which consisted of a lazy Susan with various Chinese dishes and drinks included.

The location of the hotel was very good... Hi to Oscar and Alan our Chinese guides who were excellent. We found this hotel slightly older than our other hotels on this tour. It had no seating in the reception which we missed, as we like to chat to other guests. Slighly lacking in atmostphere for us.

Room Tip: High location as the rooms are quieter

Stayed here as part of an organised tour and did not select this hotel myself - however if I was to return to Beijing I would definitely stay here again. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Free internet is available through a cable. Breakfast offers a good selection of both Western and Chinese cuisine, with fruits and cakes also available. Location wise the hotel is about a 20minute walk from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square through some nice back streets with lots of gift shops, restaurants and local houses. Staff were always polite. The only downside to the hotel is the lifts - for such a large busy hotel two small lifts were not adequate to service the guests, several times I waited for 5-10minutes as the lifts went past my floor then down again, when they eventually arrived the were packed full. I would have used the stairs but there were no obvious stair cases to use. That being said, I would definitely stay at this comfortable city centre hotel.

We stayed in Beijing at this hotel at the start of a three week tour of China, so first impressions of the country were made here.
We did not select it, so neither do we know what the room cost. Usually these are factors in my reviews.
Back home again, looking back, there Are many positive thing to say about the Dong Fang.
It is a very historic hotel. The public areas have many pictures depicting important people in Chinese modern history and meetings held there. Most of it I did not really understand, but pinyin was invented at meetings in the Dong Fang.
Most of the facilities and services were pretty typical of a three star hotel. Yes, the beds are hard, but they always are in China. On the whole trip we never stayed in an international hotel, and I was glad of it.
Lots of guests, the majority, were Chinese, and weddings are held there. I thought it a good introduction to the country.
As for the area, I too was shocked at the poverty all around. Indeed, it is not a "good" area. But this is China! Do you want to gloss over reality? We saw much more shocking things than a bit of dirt on our trip. Actually I never felt the area to be unsafe, though were were careful, as always, and the street food was fantastic.
One problem worth mentioning. The taxi driver from the airport did not seem able to find the hotel, despite checking with the despatcher, and we having the name and address in English and in Chinese characters written down.Had we not shared the taxi with another person staying at an international hotel ( where the porter instructed our driver ) we would have been a bit stuck.

Stayed here for four nights whilst in Beijing. Rooms are OK; clean, decent bathroom complete with the usual complimentary commodities, air con and free internet via an ethernet cable. A number of the floors allow smoking and the room did smell a bit to begin with but soon cleared after running the AC for a while. Limited English (well pretty good got China) spoken by reception staff, but they were fairly helpful when required and would write directions or locations in Chinese for you to give to taxi drivers. Hotel is used by a lot of tour groups and as such makes up most of the clientele. Not too sure why other people are complaining about it being in a 'bad area' as it was like any other Asian city with local shops and restaurant and everyone being fairly friendly, but if you prefer a more 'western' sanitised location then maybe it is 'bad'. It was within walking distance of a few attractions, but as taxis are so cheap in Beijing that was usually the preferred option.
