Owner description: Dating back about one thousand years, these neighborhoods of narrow, twisting streets represent the “real life” of Beijing, where passageways connect to courtyards of traditional compact homes. Pedicab tours of the hutongs are popular tourist attractions that normally include the Drum Tower, courtyard neighborhoods and Prince Gong's mansion.

This is the second time I had been to 南锣鼓巷。I went during the day the other time and this time I went at night. It was as crowded as daytime. You can find interesting stuffs while you walk along the streets. There are a lot of cafes around for you to rest your feet if you are tired. However, be prepared to pay for the public toilets. Cleaniness level is not too bad.

Interesting area for a stroll, but beware of anyone offering private tours. If you take a tour, wait to the end to pay the guide or you may find that you have no guide half way through your tour!

The place is a really long alley way tucked away from the chaos of the city. A subway line also just recently opened, so it would be more convenient for people who has trouble getting around the city by bus, which is a lot less English friendly.
The alley way sells some really communist looking merchandises and other Beijing souvenirs for rip off prices, and the restaurants and cafes on the street are really expensive also. However, if you want authentic Beijing food, just walk a little further towards the drum tower, and there are a lot more restaurants where locals eat.
Overall, its a great place to visit, not to be missed if you are visiting Beijing, you can couple this place up with visits to houhai lake, beihai park, drum tower and other hutong areas in Beijing.

-shooping at the oldest hutong at Beijing.
-narrow street and small interesting shop.
-easily acess from town, take local bus and drop at "gu lou" stop.
-if you like to shop and eat , it is a place for you.
-can visit a "yandaixiejie" too.
