Owner description: Dating back about one thousand years, these neighborhoods of narrow, twisting streets represent the "real life" of Beijing, where passageways connect to courtyards of traditional compact homes. Pedicab tours of the hutongs are popular tourist attractions that normally include the Drum Tower, courtyard neighborhoods and Prince Gong's mansion.
Useful Information: Stroller parking

The place is a really long alley way tucked away from the chaos of the city. A subway line also just recently opened, so it would be more convenient for people who has trouble getting around the city by bus, which is a lot less English friendly.
The alley way sells some really communist looking merchandises and other Beijing souvenirs for rip off prices, and the restaurants and cafes on the street are really expensive also. However, if you want authentic Beijing food, just walk a little further towards the drum tower, and there are a lot more restaurants where locals eat.
Overall, its a great place to visit, not to be missed if you are visiting Beijing, you can couple this place up with visits to houhai lake, beihai park, drum tower and other hutong areas in Beijing.

-shooping at the oldest hutong at Beijing.
-narrow street and small interesting shop.
-easily acess from town, take local bus and drop at "gu lou" stop.
-if you like to shop and eat , it is a place for you.
-can visit a "yandaixiejie" too.

My guide who knew the ins and outs of the hutongs in this area took me to areas with less people. I noticed that these areas have more traditional character than the more touristy spots of the same attraction.

Walk from the subway station, pass by a McDonald's in a traditional Chinese building, NanLuoguxiang is an interesting walk. Snacks are available. Walk a bit farther and you'll get to the HouHai area as well where you can find a Starbucks with a traditional Chinese architectural design.

It is a narrow street but I like the variety of shops inside. You can shop for modern stuffy like notepad, phone case, bags with creative designs. Or you can find traditional artwork. You can also find different kinds of tuck shops and restaurants. Taiwanese drinks, Japanese octopus balls, Korean snacks, skews, pizza, puffs, etc.
