“Great location, great price but tired property”

The location is fantastic-- easy subway access and access to restaurants, sites, etc. Shop around for prices as local pricing tends to be less than many third party internet offers and is extremely reasonable. Having said that, the property is tired and pretty basic, but considering the price paid, a moderately-clean, comfortable place with which to base business or pleasure while in BJ.

We stopped here as part of a tour of China. The hotel is on a busy street corner (8 or 9 lanes to cross). Don't be fooled by the green man, cross at your peril, drivers in China don't obey the highway code!

Anyway, the reception staff were friendly and we went to find our room. First impression, reasonable size but a bit dark. Carpet was marked / stained and usual mold around bath etc. Slippers were provided and were used.

If you like a firm bed then you will love China (and this hotel) and the pillows were soft. We had two single beds.

We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on that.

The hotel is in a great location, close to the centre of Beijing.

All in all it was not bad but then we only slept here, We didn't spend too much time in the room.

We arrived at the hotel from the airport by taking the subway - very straightforward. Upon check-in we were offered smoking or non-smoking rooms and were given a room on a non-smoking floor. The room itself was clean and very comfortable (though the heat was REALLY cranked up - thankfully we were able to adjust it from the room itself). The washroom had been updated as others have indicated. There was free wi-fi in the lobby which we also appreciated. And, further to what others have said, it's in a great location - 15 minutes to walk to Tiananmen Square, the National Museum, and the Forbidden City. It is also close to a supermarket which was SO important as we were traveling during Chinese New Year and a great deal of restaurants were closed.

My only complaint was that staff in the restaurant weren't that helpful, and they overcharged us. Unfortunately our Mandarin leaves much to be desired and so there was no way to discuss the overcharging. Otherwise, staff in the lobby were just fine.

Room Tip: If you want a non-smoking room, be sure to ask. Others we were traveling with did not specify and th...

This is a well maintained and well run establishment. The restroom in the room is recently remodeled so very nice. Beware, the shower will leak, hence the drain in the bathroom floor. The view from the room is unremarkable, and there is a significant amount of street noise. The A/C is not quite effective, so we had to have our window open during sleeping hours. The third floor is by far the worst for second hand smoke as this is where the night club is located. If cigarette smoke bothers you, please ask for non smoking or a higher floor. Overall it's a clean hotel, and the staff is very efficient. The location is superb!

Room Tip: Higher floors have less second hand smoke. Request room off street side due to traffic noise. If y...

I was pleasantly suprised by this hotel. First off, the location is absolutely fabulous. It's steps away from the subway stop at Chongwenmen and even within walking distance of Tiananmen Sqaure. The rooms were clean and quiet (my room was not facing the street). Each room had a hairdryer and TV with several English language stations. I was a little disappointed that the AC units were not working. Apparently they're turned off throughout the hotel after September to conserve energy (I was there early Oct. and the temps were still quite high). This hotel also has a very nice lobby with a lovely seating area for reading or enjoying tea. Also, just a block up there is a mall, a grocery store, and a number of western-style fast food joints (McD's, BK, KFC, Starbucks). All in all I found this hotel to be pretty great. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-street facing room.

I can't think of a better home base in Beijing than the Chong Wen Men Hotel. You have two subway entrances right outside the front doors and you are within 2-3 stops of the Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Lama Temple, New World Shopping, the Hutongs, and other great city sites and attractions. Wedome Cafe is a delicious and very expensive bakery and coffee establishment right around the corner (make a left leaving the hotel, and it's just around the corner.

Yes, it's an older hotel, but it wasn't dirty at all. The mattresses are very firm as a heads up, but you are going to find that everywhere. Also, I found non-smoking to be more of a suggestion than a requirement so you might detect the faint hint of smoke. That being said, this place covers the most important requirements for me: clean, cheap, and safe, with a bonus of being very close to what you want to see/do in the city.

This was my first trip to China and we were part of a G Adventures tour. We came a day early to acclimate to the time zone, the weather, and ease into the culture. The Chong Wen Men is centrally located to get to pretty much everything you need to see as a tourist, since there's a metro station right next to it.

The room was small. We had two twin beds, which by Chinese standards are very, very firm. It's like sleeping on box springs. The bathrooms are a little on the small side as well. Our first night was fine, but there was water leaking from underneath the tub from a large gap that had been sealed. When I explained this to the front desk the next morning, they moved us to another room down the hall. All the television stations are in Chinese except for two: a news station and what looked like a Disney station. WiFi was available in the lobby. There is a refrigerator and safe in the room. The liter bottled water was 8 yuan each, which equaled about a $1.32 American, so it was actually a bargain. I do recommend brushing your teeth with bottled water.

I would agree with some of the other reviews that the place could use some renovation. But honestly, if you plan on staying in your room to admire it, what the hell are you doing in Beijing? This hotel works for sleeping and showering, so it's an ideal choice for travelers who plan on seeing the interesting and cultural sights the city has to offer. There's no bells or whistles, no room service or spa, none of the shi-shi stuff some people think they need. Keep in mind, you are in China, so pretty much the whole nation speaks Chinese.

The staff was efficient and cordial. Just from my observation, they deal with Chinese people, so English at times can be limited, but if you speak slowly and with a gentle tone, your needs will be met. I understand how foreigners may feel when they visit America and have to deal with rude hotel personnel here. Ironically, I am Chinese American but cannot speak the language, so you can imagine how that went.

One of my best finds was the Wedome Bakery around the corner. Coffee and fresh baked goods. They open at 7 am and they don't speak English. Most of the fresh baked goods won't come out until about 7:30-8. Something to help you with, "Kof-fay jah new-nigh" (coffee with milk), and if you want it iced say, "bing."

I would recommend staying here if you need a central location. I would consider staying here again since I know my way around now because you can get to any of the tourist attractions easily. I do recommend learning some helpful phrases before going.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the back are quieter, not much of a view but it's not like you're near an o...
