“Very central location, cheap rates, but a bit cold rooms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

I stayed in this hostel for three nights with two fellow backpacking travelers in November 2012. As we had booked this ho(s)tel online, we were still surprised how central (i.e. close to Tiananmen square and the Forbidden city) this accomodation was.

The room rates (we paid 50 Yuan per person per night in a four-bed room with own toilet and shower) were very good and the staff very friendly. The beds were very comfortable, although the room did not seem to have any heating but only an A/C. So it was a bit chilly in it in November. Maybe this is not the fault of the hostel but ours as we did not find out how to operate the A/C.

The bath is good and clean. Wooden storage boxes / shelves are provided which can be secured with your own lock. However, if you have something really valuable you can use the safety boxes near the reception.

The hostel offers a business area on the first floor, which helps with bookings of trains and tours (the later one is much cheaper if booked at one of the tour agencies outside on Meishi street or the nearby Hutongs). Unfortunately we only found out on our second-last day that there is a restaurant & bar & chill area with food, free-wifi access and pool-game at the top floor, offering a great view over Beijing and at the Tiananmen Square. This restaurant also serves breakfast for a good price, so make sure you go there instead of taking the 25Yuan all-you-can-eat (or all-your-stomache-can-handle) breakfast behind the reception.

All in all we can surely recommend this hostel to anyone staying in Beijing!

The rooms here are clean and a good value, the location is ideal for exploring Tien Amen Square, the Forbidden City as well as getting on the subway. Wifi works well and the hotel breakfast was good. The hotel bar on the top floor was a nice plus with good views of the surrounding area.

I stayed at this hotel in July 2007 whilst visiting Beijing. The hotel is quite modern and fair and the location was very decent. Was in walking distance of The CCTV tower, Tienanmen square, Opera house and the city center. Right outside of the hotel is a roads and back alleys full of shops, Food and restaurants so you won't be short on finding something to do in the day. We had breakfast, Lunch and dinner included and the food was excellent. The staff were OK were helping. Certainly would go back again.

After having a bad experience in the hotel booked through booking.com, we had to knock the door of King's Joy.. The rate was OK considering it included the breakfast though which was poor for a western visitor. Cleanness was poor as we had to ask house-keeping to sweep off the floor when 1st entered! The toilet had a very bad smell and flush did not work. Though the location of the hotel is very good as it is on a walking distance to Forbiden City, shoping area, metro and bus station. With some improvements it could be a nice hotel.

Stayed at King's Joy Hotel for a couple of nights whilst in Beijing.

Location was fantastic for exploring all the major sights of Beijing (Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, etc) and only an hour or so from a picturesque section of The Great Wall. Lots of good eateries nearby.

Rooms were of a decent size and were clean. Bathroom was also functional, spacious and clean.

The top floor bar/restaurant was excellent - free wifi, comfortable couches, reasonably prices food/drinks, books to read, and a GREAT view of the city.

Customer service however, was a huge let down. Reception staff were unhelpful and brusque. And the guys working in the bar/restaurant were awful - they literally seemed annoyed (rolling eyes, huffing/puffing) if an order was placed... as it appeared we had interrupted them chatting and/or playing on their mobile phones. This happened continually and with a number of different guys. Very disappointing!

Please note that I am a very reasonable guest when staying in middle class hotels - I never expect too much of the staff (nor do I expect them to treat me like royalty) and I always treat staff with respect. But I (personally) found the customer service here to be extremely average - particularly when comparing it to other hotels I have stayed in throughout China (and other parts of Asia).

Although the hotel itself (and location) was quite good, I would not recommend this hotel to others due to the poor customer service I received!

The location was central and hotel clean and basic. The internet did not work at all. No one offered to fix it. No airconditioning in the bar area during hot temperatures. I did not feel the breakfast was anything special and set up in an awkward area making it a traffic jam. BUT the price was right. The neighborhood in the area was dirty. I did not feel safe as a single female walking down some of the streets, but others were cleaner. I had just landed from a massive flight delay after the floods so my impressions of Beijing might be unfair, but my impression leaving was that after staying centered out of this area that there was some part of Beijing that I missed. We did the tourist attractions, but something about the neighborhood which surrounded it felt off from other non-tourist areas we visited in the city.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask them about internet. I did not have access in my room nor in the lounge. There are a...

I stayed in one of the hotel rooms at Kings Joy. The rooms were fine, basic but served their purpose.
The hotel was in a great location, just a 5 min walk to shops, restaurants etc. A 10 min walk to the nearest subway and the square and the forbidden city.
I didn't try the restaurant food, but had food in the roof top bar, which was reasonable and decent, however, service did not come with a smile and as incredibly slow.
Wifi is available in the main areas, but not the rooms.

Room Tip: I'd ask not to be to close to the roof top bar (on 6th floor, and lift only goes to fifth floor)
